Check the battery voltage and the cables. Cables should be clean and tight.

OK, now what is the voltage when you try to crank? Do the headlights go REAL dim?

sounds like it has been narrowed down to
    either ignition switch -
    neutral safety switch -
    or a bad starter -

if the neutral safety switch is going bad -
or is slightly out of adjustment - this may work -

put your foot on the brake and hold it -
try putting the shifter in neutral and turn the key to start -

if nothing - wiggle the shifter - between Drive and Reverse -
while holding the key in the start position -
if nothing - put it into park really hard -
    again wiggle the shifter -

if the car starts at some point - you found the problem -
if it doesn't start - you can NOT rule out the NSS

Perhaps a loose battery cable on the starter solenoid?

Re: My 2001 DTS didn't start every time..... Please Help

Hi, About what you said about neutral safety switch. this is what I did:

hold taping on brake pedal - put the shifter in neutral - turn the key and i wiggle the shifter between drive and reverse, but here is my question:

(Is that normal the shifter going to drive and reverse very smoothly while holding the key in starting position )

    Please answer my question

    Thanks

I think he meant to wiggle it in park or neutral, but it should be able to move like you said as long as you foot is on the brake. That releases the shift interlock.

Remove the rear seat, to gain access to the battery. Check all connections, positive and negative at the battery, the fuse box underneath the seat. There is also a ground conection underneath the seat, make sure that is clean and tight.

Disconnect, the positive lead AT THE BATTERY. Open the hood, go the fuse box on the right side of the vehicle. Remove the main fuse box cover, the one with the red positive cover attached to it. Make sure the leads from the starter that attach to that fuse box are clean and tight.

Next to the fuse box, looking down towards the frame rail, in between the fender and the fuse box is a ground strap stud, Make sure that ground cable is clean and secure there. That cable also attaches to the head. Getting to the connection at the head will be tricky, but it can be done, make sure that connection is tight also.

Underaneath the vehicle, on the LEFT SIDE FRONT, at the transmission, there will be two or three small grounds that attach to the transmission, double check those.

After checking all conections with the battery disconnected and you feel certain that they are clean and secure, reconnect the battery under the seat.

Attempt to start the vehicle again, hope for the best. Otherwise, you'll be pulling a starter to test or replace.

I watched your video twice and you stated you started the car and drove to your friends house and came outside and it won't start.

You either have a loose connection somewhere or the starter is failing due to something called age or what used to be known as "heat soak".

Starters used to get some warm from being near exhaust that a lot of them had heat shields to protect the solenoid from the heat. Yet, where the starter is located on a northstar, it shouldn't be possible.

Most likely a loose connection. Good luck.
