There is a lot of spring tension on it. Put a cheater bar (pipe) over the wrench handle to give yourself more leverage.

Okay, I got the tensioner to free the belt and i got the idler pulley off to get this result...

The new one is on the left and the old one is on the right. They look about the same to me...? could there be something wrong with it that i dont see? because outside of a little dirt, they seem the same.

Also, I forgot which order these items go in...I got a little excited when I got it out

Re: Replace Idler Pulley on 97 Deville

Well, gentlemen, it is done. I got everything back in its place with the new idler pulley ready to rock and roll and lo and behold I still have the same clicking around the belt area. It sounds exactly the same as before. My guess would be that it is the tensioner that needs replacing but I'm not sure.

I really appreciate everyone giving me help with this. Wouldn't have been able to do it without you.

The tensioner pulley bearing seems to fail MUCH more than the idler. A little late now, but for future reference, a stethoscope would have told you which one it was.

I was thinking the same thing Ranger.... It would show up pretty clear what pulley was acting up. I use mine all the time to narrow down issues with injectors to pulleys.

Well it was a good little bit of experience for you. I feel your pain though. I have a freaking squeaky belt on my '94 Eldo that I have just learned to live with. I have tried a new belt, tensioner and an idler, all to no avail!

I have a 93 Eldorado, changed the alternator on it the other day, put a new tensioner on it because Ive read their prone to going out.. put it back together and had a really bad squeal... so I put the old tensioner back on and the squeal isn't as bad but still there, only time it ever squealed before was in a bad rain storm... does anyone know if theres a spacer or washer behind the tensioner I may have dropped??

    any help is welcome...

Are you sure the noise is the belt slipping, and not a squealing pulley bearing?

    Did you change the belt?

    Is this a base/4.9 or an ETC/Northstar?

    BTW,
