Survey 2004 and 2005 Deville Owners

I would like to collect some data from owners of 2004 and 2005 Deville's only. If you happen to own one of these fine automobiles, would you be kind enough to share the following...

    -current mileage

-what % your "Transmission Fluid Life Monitor" is currently reading

-has the monitor ever been reset... if so at what mileage

I'm investigating a theory on a possible algorithm change with the 2004 model year so I'm not interested in any data from 2003 and earlier cars.

Do you know what the mileage was when you reset it in Feb 2010?

Interesting data so far, here's mine...

    2004 Deville
-85K on the clock when purchased
-72% on fluid life monitor (unknown history of reset... if any)
-replaced fluid with Dexron VI and reset monitor

-98% currently on fluid life monitor
    -91K current mileage

Keep the data coming in on the 2004 and 2005 Deville's.

I have an 04 Deville with 119,000 miles, reading 57% remaining transmission life. Here's the CAVEAT though: When I bought the car at the end of '04 it had 29,000 miles and was reading something like 5% remaining transmission life. I thought that was kind of screwy and reset it to 100%. Thinking back on it these years later I am still perplexed how it could have read 5% with such relatively low miles.

The 5% reading at 29K makes no sense. What is interesting though is after you reset it, then drove it 90K miles it dropped 43% which comes to an average drop of 1% every 2100 miles. So far my 04 seems to drop by 1% approximately every 3000 miles. I've noticed the fluid life monitor on my 04 acts very differently then what I'm accustomed to seeing after owning both an 00 and an 02.

From the limited data that has been posted to this thread so far it appears there may have been a change to the software algorithm in 2004 that changed the way the fluid life monitor behaves. It appears to count down in a similar way as the engine oil life monitor system instead of staying at 100% all the time like the 03 and earlier cars do... unless they experience a fluid temperature rise.

If you own an 04 or 05 car please continue to post your data for fluid life trend analysis. We need more data before coming to a final conclusion.

Agreed. It would be interesting to know what exactly the Fluid Life Monitor is measuring. Mine was barely a year old when I bought it but it had lived its first year as a rental car, in Nevada I believe, hence the high mileage in under a year. I always wondered if that had something to do with the 5% reading.

    2005 DTS

    102,000 miles
    77% on monitor
Haven't changed it myself since I bought the car but I'm planning on doing it soon. Not overly worried about it right now.

Interesting. What does the '04 and up FSM have to say about this? I would think if it decrements like the OLM it should be explained somewhere in there.

Re: Survey 2004 and 2005 Deville Owners

    Here's what my manual says

TRANSMISSION FLUID LIFE: This message shows
the percentage of remaining transmission fluid life for
your vehicle. Under normal conditions, the rate of
deterioration of the transmission fluid is slow. See
Scheduled Maintenance on page 6-4 for proper fluid
and change intervals. To reset the transmission fluid
life, press the INFO button to display TRANS FLUID
LIFE, then press and hold the INFO RESET button
until 100% TRANS FLUID LIFE is displayed. This
only needs to be reset after you have had the
    fluid changed.

"Under normal conditions, the rate of
deterioration of the transmission fluid is slow."
I'm wondering what they mean by slow. Mine has read 77% since I bought the car. I've put like 7,000 miles on it and it hasn't budged. I always thought that it was supposed to stay at 100 or 99% or something was wrong. But since it has stayed the same I'm not too worried. But I think I will change it after the holidays.

Is that ^^^^ from the FSM (Factory Service Manual) or the owners manual? The owners manual is very general and will not explain HOW it works. The FSM may go into a little more detail for the tech.

Yeah that's just the owner's manual. I still haven't picked up a FSM yet. Should probably get one before I actually NEED it, lol.

I was unable to find any description of how the transmission fluid life monitor operates in either the 02 or 04 FSM. The only thing I was able to find was a mention of if the life monitor reads under 10% to change the fluid.

The conclusions that I have drawn so far have been based on the observations I've made on how the life monitor on my 04 acts very differently than what I've been accustomed to seeing on the other N*'s I've owned. What is interesting is of the 5 CF members that own an 04 or 05 that have responded to this thread... not a single one has given the answer that you would expect to hear from an owner of an 03 or earlier car (that the monitor has always read 100%).

Hmm, let me see if I can get ahold of Ewill3rd. Maybe he knows.
