ABS Speed Sensor (2002 Deville DTS)

Hello, I have a 2002 Deville DTS and am having issues with TC and ABS. ABS will engage under normal breaking until I get a "Service Stability System" notice, at which point the ABS and TC stop working. With direction from previous posts, I checked the drivers side (FL) speed sensor, cleaned it with contact cleaner but the problem persists. The FL bearing was changed (and I understand the actual sensor is in the bearing?). I noticed that the speed sensor wiring harness is taped up, suggesting issues with the previous owner. I would like to change the wiring harness...can this be done with out touching the bearing? Does it simply connect to the outside of the bearing?

Thanks in advance! (great forum by the way...just joined recently)

    Darryl

In this diagram you can see the wheel speed sensor electrical pigtail sticking out of the hub inside center. The front hub assemblies are different from the rears.....

Thanks very much! I'll order the part today. From your helpful diagram, looks like it will take 10 minutes

Domino - thanks for the reply and the welcome...it wasn't displaying any codes...just chimes, then resets after each ignition cycle. I'll update after swapping the wiring harness to let everyone know if it fixes it (I'm sure others have similar issues).

Can't say enough about how great this forum is! You're all helping a lot of people

Re: ABS Speed Sensor (2002 Deville DTS)

IF it's the harness/plug, fine, BUT..........if it's the sensor itself,

Not 10 minutes - I believe the front wheel speed sensor is part of the hub - you change the whole enchilada and that's a job and a half, especially if the CV axle spline is rusted into the hub spline. The brake caliper has to come off as well as the rotor and there's some tricky bolt work and then specific torque wrench work to do.

Re: ABS Speed Sensor (2002 Deville DTS)

Thanks, Sub. Just had the Bearing repalced, so the sensor should be good. For the wiring harness, do you know if it is the same part w/ and w/o heavy duty brakes?

This is the AC Delco part number i'm finding on rockauto:
    ACDELCO Part # 19181883
SENSOR,FRT WHL SPD w/HVY DUTY PWR BRK(J55); Base Model Engine VIN Y

or would this be more appropriate:
    AIRTEX / WELLS Part # 5S7991 {#25678857, SU9457}
    2 required per vehicle; Front

Also got a quote from a local parts store for $135. He says it includes the sensor, but I doubt it.

    Appreciate the help!!

Anyone know if the ABS Wheel Speed Sensor wiring harness part is dependent on if brake system is heavy duty or not. Part numbers I found are in above post.

    Thanks!

The HD brakes refer to the limousine package - I doubt that your DTS has it.

Call Chris at Rippy Cadillac, Parts >>> over there. Have your VIN handy.

Re: ABS Speed Sensor (2002 Deville DTS)

Thank you, Sub. Right, I certainly don't have the HD brakes...just wondering if the wiring harness is the same? I can only find one AC Delco part (part# in above post). I wouldn't think the connectors would be different for HD brakes and non-HD brakes...would they?

I'm hoping to order this part today and swap it before it gets too cold here

Re: ABS Speed Sensor (2002 Deville DTS)

    Hi,
I just picked up the wiring harness...it comes with the connector on one end and two wires on the other. Before I attempt this, is there a way of diagnosing if the issue is simply with the wiring (current one is taped up at one end), or the sensor itself?
Also, is attaching the wiring to the sensor a relatively easy job?

    Thanks all,
    Darryl
