Get the intake duct out of the way. Remove the tension from the belt tensioner and remove the belt. Remove the pump cover. Use the pump socket (special tool) to remove the pump. It's cam locked, not threaded so it only takes about 1/8 turn clockwise to loosen it.

Why are you removing it? Is it leaking?

Re: How to Water Pump Removal

for starters [like ranger said] there's a special tool for N* water pumps that you will need. you will need it.
you can probably rent one from a parts store

our shop recommends updates to the the pump cover housing and gaskets on both sides of the housing
gm has done a re-design of the housing and has made the t/stat gasket slightly larger
the 'teardrop' cover to block gasket has been changed too - but i can't tell a significant difference
dealer list price on those parts will be around $70, but if you ask nicely i'll give you a discount & free ground shipping if you're east of the mississippi (1/2 price ground to the west - if you're right on the mississippi we'll talk)
btw, i can sell the pump for $75 (list is $114)
for dexcool you're on your own, i can't ship that stuff but the price has come way down at the dealers $17/gal (list price!)

Here is the pump socket you'll need. Mine's home made, but an exact copy.

I can lookup the dealer cost of that special tool if you wish ranger, unless of course you already know the value of your hard work

that is a nice piece of work!

Re: How to Water Pump Removal

Thanks Rippy. When I made it a few years ago it was a fun project to see if I could do it. It has been good insurance as I have yet to need it. Too bad my welds weren't a little nicer. At the time Snap-on (strap-on) wanted like $75 or $80. Kentmoore (spentmore) was probably even higher. Lysle makes a cheap stamped steel version for about $20. Sometimes they work and sometimes they slip off. Good news is you can rent rent them from most tool stores that have rental programs.

One caveat. What is not obvious in my picture is the new pump cover is slightly thinner at the bolt hole flanges than the old pump cover. All that means is your cover bolts might bottom out before producing sufficient clamping to provide a seal.

I'll bet GM has a part # for shorter bolts.

Or, one washer will make up the difference.

Re: How to Water Pump Removal

we've never used new bolts in all the years of putting those new covers on and never had a problem with bolts bottoming out
i don't think we've yet had a leaky updated cover yet either (or pump for that matter)

how much thinner are you talking?

Just enough to allow a drip until I used a washer.

I was not inclined to remove the new cover and put a micrometer on the bolt hole flanges.
