Remove power steering pump pulley 2001 Deville

I'm getting ready to replace the power steering pump on my 2001 Deville. My book doesn't give many details, so I'm wondering how the pulley comes off the pump.

Re: Remove power steering pump pulley 2001 Deville

The pulley has a groove machined into the metal hub extension. A special GM part # puller is used which engages the groove and uses a center bolt to pull off the pulley. Another tool is used to press the pulley back onto the new pump. If you are patient and machinery-inclined, a 3-jaw gear puller can be ground so the jaws fit into the pulley groove.

A local automotive machine shop can do the whole procedure. The pulley is pressed on within a tolerance of +/- .010" of the shaft/pulley bore being flush.

I have pulled lots of power steering pulleys off with a three jaw puller. But you have to but some long heavy gauge steel plate behind the pulley so that when you start pulling you don't twist or bend the pulley.Don't be in a hurry and slowly tighten the puller. It will come off.Good luck.

Some of the pullers that you borrow from parts houses will work, just make sure they are small enough lip to grab the hub in the middle of the pulley. Do not grab the outside edge or you will warp the pulley. From what I remember the 2-jaw puller from advance was small enough, but the 3-jaw wasn't.

When I did the PS pump on the Lincoln I bought the tool at Sears for $40. I figured I'll use it again someday on someone else's car.

Re: Remove power steering pump pulley 2001 Deville

I've read the post about replacing the power steering pump pulley on 01 Cadillac Deville. Is there a way a individual can put the pulley onto the new pump?

Yes. The puller is also used as an installer or you can simply press it back on with the bolt and a stack of washers.

Re: Remove power steering pump pulley 2001 Deville

Thank You. I will be attempting the change this weekend. I will be trying to makeshift a puller and the stacked washers. Should I make the pulley flush with the end of the shaft if I don't have a actual measuring device?

Not positive, but I think it does go to the end of the shaft. Study the old one before you pull it.

Mine is flush with the end of the shaft closest to the coolant tank. You can get the proper tool from harbor freight for $40 or less. It will make your life SO muche easier......
