94 Concours traction disabled

Remove this ad
Well I just bought this 1994 Deville Concours and I'm having a few problems.
I am brand new to owning a Cadillac, so go easy on me.
I have searched a lot before posting, but I'm still confused.
The traction says disabled on the dash and I really need to get it fixed before the snow fall.
I read that it could just be the ABS fuse, I checked it and it is good.
Also I read it could be the computer in the trunk but I don't know where it is located or what it looks like.
I was thinking it could also be a relay??
So where should I start?
Thanks for any help and if some one might have some pictures to help guide me that would be awesome too.

Re: 94 Concours traction disabled

First thing, check you OBD codes, there's a sticky at the top of the forum on how to do it.

(You don't even want to THINK about that computer in the trunk being bad!)

Re: 94 Concours traction disabled

Does it have a T/C disable button in the glove box?

Isn't that supposed to reset each time you drive?

I've been fighting this error message for months.

The only code I got for a long time relating to is was wheel speed sensor fault and WSS circuit continuity fault. Those are the most common problems related to this.

However, I changed the hub and checked the circuit. (The old hub is still good, BTW.)

Every once in a while I got a T077 code, which no one could describe. I bought the service manual and it is for a PCM data link fault.

Turns out my ground stud on the Break Pressure Module pump is broken. I plan to pull one from the junk yard and replace it. A new one is like $1500 and you can get them rebuilt for around $500.

I may try to fix the ground stud on mine before I replace it, I just want to have a backup before I screw it up.

Re: 94 Concours traction disabled

Good question. If it does reset I would expect it to reset to T/C ON.

33 RR Wheel Speed Sensor Continuity Fault

That's your problem... maybe...

From the service manual:

Circuit Description:
As each wheel turns, the signal generated by each wheel speed sensor is sent to the EBTCM. The EBTCM uses the wheel speed sensor signal to calculate vehicle reference speeds and individual speed, acceleration and slip values for each wheel. These values are used to determine when antilock control is required.

The EBTCM will only set one wheel speed sensor fault code at a time, even if multiple faults exist. Detection is prioritized accordingly: LF, RR, LR, RF. Always check for additional stored codes after making repairs.

DTC Will Set When:
DTC 33 is set if there is a short to voltage or an open in CKT 882 or 883, or faulty speed sensor. The testing for this fault occurs with the ignition in "RUN" and the vehicle at rest.

Action Taken:

DTC set.
ABS and TCS switched "OFF."
"ANTILOCK" indicator "ON."
"TRACTION CONTROL" indicator "ON."
DTC Chart Test Description:
Test numbers refer to circled numbers on the DTC chart.

Checks for proper resistance in the sensor itself.
Checks for a short to voltage in either of the speed sensor circuit wires. There should be 5V on CKT 882. If there is, CKT 882 has no hard opens or shorts. The condition may be intermittent.
Checks for an open in both the speed sensor circuit wires.
Manipulates wiring and connectors, trying to induce an intermittent fault not currently present.
This test checks if the code resets on key-up. If so, since Tests 1-4 have validated that the circuitry and components are good, the speed sensor may be causing the fault.
Checks if the DTC 31 sets during a road test.
The wheel speed sensor may be causing an intermittent fault. If DTC 33 resets after sensor replacement, the EBTCM has an internal malfunction.
Diagnostic Aids:
Be sure the speed sensor wiring is properly routed and retained. This will help prevent false signals due to electrical noise being picked up by the wiring. It is very important that a thorough inspection of the wiring and connectors be performed.

MAKE SURE THAT SENSOR IS CONNECTED!

Re: 94 Concours traction disabled

Now that I've looked it over I'm thinking it might be the t033 code making the traction not work?

Re: 94 Concours traction disabled

Yup. You're gonna have to change the hub & bearing assembly.

Re: 94 Concours traction disabled

Sometimes, if you've had breaks done or tires put on, they'll leave that sensor uplugged.

Re: 94 Concours traction disabled

Well the car just had new rotors and pads all the way around from the previous owner.
So I'm going to call him and ask if the traction was disabled after the brake job.

Does any one have a picture of the sensor and where it is located?
Will I be able to take a look with out taking the wheel off?
If not I'll have to wait until I get off of work to check.

Re: 94 Concours traction disabled

The plug is on the backside of the hub. You might be able to see it without pulling the wheel if you turn the wheel all the way inboard.

Re: 94 Concours traction disabled

The speed sensor is part of the only electrical connector on each hub - It's real obvious that you have the correct wire.

Are you certain that you have no other bad hubs?
