97 concours air intake

i've been looking through ebay motors and i see a lot of air intake kits for my car; they all look about the same and cost roughly 55 bucks

do you think it would be a waste of money or be worth it?

i also talked to a "tech" at pepboys and he suggested that i buy a cheapo intake then buy a k and n filter

Re: 97 concours air intake

The best thing you can do (the car already has a more-than-adequate cold air intake) is clean the throttlebody after you get used to the car, and change to a WIX panel filter - more media, more pleats, less restriction. K&N is good at marketing, but their filter will do nothing a good pleated unit will do. .........and their million-mile ad is misleading - do the real math over 200,000 miles instead of the smoke and mirrors of a million. Also know that Northstar MAF sensors do not like oiled filter panels - if a little is good, then more must be better (!), so you get vapor and droplets in the airstream which fouls the heated resistors in the MAF.

Aftermarket MAF's and bored throttlebodies give you a midrange stumble and set codes. Ask me how I know.........

Several Deville owners have gone into the bottom of the airbox and extended the ductwork down to the lower grille area. A morning's fun, and you learn a lot about how and why the thing's built that way........

Very, very little in the way of power/speed tricks for our Northstars in a FWD configuration, so keep it clean, tuned, and enjoy the ride.

The K&N will also pass more dirt than a Wix, Delco or Fram pleated filter.

Re: 97 concours air intake

Hey yea i would not do it waste of money. I have tried it and it just didn't work. It would throw the mass air flow sensor code every time you started to go down the road. The check engine light would just come on. It rode horrible when the check engine light was on to. It didn't like it at all. I also purchased mine off of Ebay. So i cleaned my original air box up and put it back on man it ran so much better. So there you go don't do it.

Re: 97 concours air intake

fatngs, If you're going to replace the MAF, take a look at www.rockauto.com and get to your car/engine, emissions. Several choices. Either the sensor only or the entire unit, airflow control honeycomb and all.

I fooled with a JET MAF (mechanically modified for "more airflow") in my 2002 for a year, swapping back and forth, and the conclusion after two 1,800 mile Florida trips and lots of local rural road night runs is that the car runs better with the stock MAF: the JET unit lowered gas mileage a tad, caused a midrange stumble, and set SES lights and codes.
