Ok, my 1995 Deville 4.9 has 209,000 miles as of today just getting back from the store. I have been a bad boy, in these hard economic times and run cheap regular old unleaded gas despite the call on the dash for premium. But i have had this problem pretty much since I got the car over a year ago. It will start up, but when its cold there is no ping, rattle, or knocks at all. But when I hit the gas after cranking when its cold, it bogs down, like it will die if I give it too much gas to rev it. Once you are driving, and the engine gets to normal temp it starts a knock when you barely push on the gas. It sounds not really like a hammer knock, but it is a knock unless you hammer on it. Then when you floor it to pass someone or just get up to speed quickly, it rattles, kind of like you got a soda pop can in it getting ripped to shreds. I have put premium in it a time or two just out of curiosity to see if it changes anything. The rattle when you slam on the gas while driving and stuff seems to not be as bad, but it still rattles. The knock, occurrs most often when you are driving and like i say barely got your foot on the pedal. When the car is stopped, and not in gear you really dont hear it all that much. I have heard these cards get "the thump", which from what I hear it will run forever with that bearing knock, but Im not certain thats what it is? My dad said it sounded like a lower knock in the bearings too, all he said is dont floor it everywhere and dont worry about it. But the engine ping and rattle, could that be timing related? I put premium in it sometimes and it does help some, but it still does it. My brother told me once to rebuild the distributor, or at least the pick ups that are on the distributor, and read another post from someone on here with Ranger citing that it could be the ICM. I dont think that I have changed that. But have done the plugs, wires, distributor cap, and rotor cap. Any ideas? If it is timing it would be adjustable right, or is all of it computer controlled to reset itself once you do advance or retard it? any and all advice appreciated, especially you Ranger. You knowledgable man you.
