confused with codes

hey all, i have a questions regarding two codes p0102 and p0443. ive cleared the codes and they have both come back. i recently had it in a mom n pop shop and was confused by what they said. they also told me i needed to fix this because i will not be able to get a inspection sticker(which is due) if i dont. first, p0102 maf sensor- they said that it may or may not be causing the p0443 code, they then told me that the p0443 code was most likely the pcm and it would be a expensive job.

my questions are can a maf sensor cause the p0443 code to come up, or vice/versa can the p0443 code cause the p0102 code to come up. and if they are seperate whats the best way of fixing this so i can get a inspection sticker.

ive searched these codes and have found alot of very useful information(i always do!) on this site, but cant find anything similiar to what this mechanic told me.

much appreciated!

Re: confused with codes

These codes are not related, the maf sensor would have to be done first as you go by the lower code numbers first, this is not a hard job at all to do, first check the wiring to the sensor and make sure its not abraided or cut, then check the intake airbox for a clean filter, a dirty filter may cause the problem on Deaccelartion. As for the P0443, this is a evap code and it means that something is not working right in the emissions department, but changing the ECM, I don't think you are anywhere near that. In fact most of the diagnostic trees for all codes usually end with 'Replace ECM and Recalibrate' so try those first, I would suggest that you take it to a shop that knows what they are doing in regards to this problem, a dealer for instance, after you get your sticker, buy a Factory service Manual and do some of these yourself, it will amaze you on how much you can then do and it will save you all kinds of money. Good luck

Re: confused with codes

A loose gas cap will set an EVAP code. Make sure it ratchets when you close it.

Re: confused with codes

...........or the EVAP solenoid/vacuum block in the rear side of the throttlebody just next to the fuel rail and next to the EGR valve heat shield.......the valve with an electrical connector on one side and a vacuum line on the other side.

Check the vacuum line and connectors. That system purges trapped fuel vapor from a charcoal canister during parts of the engine run cycle, and there's a lot of vacuum tubing involved.
