97 Deville P1660

Hello all, looks like a great site with plenty of traffic. I hate to introduce myself this way, but I'm looking for a little help with a car I might buy.

1997 DeVille, Northstar. 150K on the clock. Car has been sitting for about 6 months, just put up for sale. Owner put a new battery in and moved it around the driveway. It was dead cold when I went to look at it last night. Took a little while to get it started. SES light was on. Took the car for a little ride. Handles fine, brakes good, etc. Dead spot on the throttle just off idle. Once she took off, hang on tight LOL. Talked to the owner this morning, said he pulled a P1660 code, O2 sensor. I did some searching, and P1660 looks like a cooling fan circuit problem. I read solutions varying from coolant temp sensor, relays, fuses, PCM. Also, the AC doesn't work, dash says low refrigerant. I haven't put my AC gauges on to confirm yet. And finally, we couldn't get the headlights to work.

Its a nice car, and the price is well below KBB for Private Sale, Fair Condition. I can fix most anything, but I don't want to buy an electrical gremlin.

Any help is appreciated, Palmer

See the sticky on codes. Pull them yourself and then go to the link provided to decipher them. Cooling fan control circuit MIGHT be a relay or fuse. If it says low refrigerant, you can count on it. Might get away just adding a can. Hard to say about the headlights. If you buy it, head on opver to Ebay and find a FSM by Helm Inc. (NOT Haynes or Chiltons).

Re: 97 Deville P1660

Thanks for the input guys. My friend pulled ten codes from it today. Various injectors, aux inputs/outputs, etc. including the P1660. I think much of that is due to sitting all winter and half the summer. Probably clear the codes, disconnect battery for an hour or so and see what happens. I don't think there is anything serious wrong with the motor. Once you get past that flat spot, that thing will haul ass.

I can get it for less than a grand, probably going to go for it.

I will keep you posted.

Didn't get the car, it was sold. Still looking for something, the wife really likes the looks of the Caddys, especially the red ones.
