    Driving without gas cap

91 Deville 58,000 miles. forgot gas cap at service station after filling up on a recent trip. Didn't know till I stoped again about 250 miles later. Now car runs really bad, very rough idel and when I pull out and give it gas you can feel the motor shake. No codes comming up except F31 my FDC does off and on. I noticed that the service engin and check engin come on when I check codes don't remember if they are suppost to. Car ran good without the cap on bought a new one from auto zone only place I could get one on the road, could it be the cap. Any suggestion or help would be great. Thanks in advance

    Re: Driving without gas cap

Sounds like water in the fuel. Perhaps some condensation formed in the tank while there was no cap on it, or maybe the new gas cap doesn't fit properly.

In addition to condensation problems, driving without a gas cap (or an improperly fitting one) will cause evaporation, and you don't want that with gas prices the way they are. Bad for the environment too.

As for fixing the rough idle, I'm not sure what to do for that...maybe run it till the tank is empty and fill up a few times? Some kind of fuel additive perhaps? Someone correct me if I'm wrong, I don't want to give out bad advice.

I wouldn't use any fuel additives. They can be hell on fuel pumps. Maybe the wrong cap. That can cause emission control problems (evap system). I'm not sure if it will cause drivability problems but it would be highly suspect since this problem started at the same time.

Late model vehicles can get problems like rough idle if gas cap is loose or poor fitting. A friend took her 01 Grand Am to dealer with such problems and she was told to tighten her gas cap until she heard it click a few times. Go figure!
