Mine needs to come out and I want to know what is the best procedure.I have been told you can pull it without removing the engine .I have also been told that you do have to pull the motor . Any help is appreciated. Thank you |

You have to literally take the entire front of the car apart and brace the sh*t out of it so the unibody doesn't bend once you remove the engine.

I have pulled a couple Buick engines without the transmission and I'm not sure if it's easier with or without the trans. However, I always told myself that if I had to change the transmission I would take it out WITH the engine rather than try to take it out by itself. Some people have taken out the trans by itself but they also reported that it was quite difficult and never any fun. I would use the same procedure on a Caddy 4.9 that I use on the Buicks. I would take the engine and trans out together. I would also replace the waterpump and timing cover while the engine was out.
I have to remove my engine this summer to replace exhaust manifold studs. It could be done on a lift but I don't have one and every shop I took it to was scared of it and wanted to quote me 10 hours labor. I may try to rent a bay this summer if I can. I mention this because you might want to make certain your exhaust manifolds are leak free if you do take the engine out. |

It's a toss up and a matter of preference. Take them out together. I've dropped the cradle out of the bottom on a few cars and it was a breeze. Some guys will swear by going out the top. If you have a hoist, go top, an A-frame, bottom for sure. Good Luck! |

Good Luck! | se now i was going to do that A-frame thing on my 90 when the trany and the engien went bad in it but was told that it wouldn't work cause if the uni-body wer to get tweaked in any way that the car would be history. but then again the guy that told me that was the same guy that charged me $600 to put them both in and did some real shoty work a well. next time i have to do it im going to use that A-frame idea though and do it my self .cause im planing on puting in another engien and trans and rebuild them both before i put them in. | | Cadillac Discussion Tools | | |
