Re: Engine name?

Nope. The 4100 was called the HT4100. Yours is just a 4.9. It has no "name".

Re: Engine name?

some people refer to it as the "L26 4.9L" but I don't know if there is an official GM name for it.

Re: Engine name?

Ok, thank u. I got an extended warranty when I got the car and it doesn't cover 4100 GM engines. Just wanted to make sure.

Re: Engine name?

4.9's are related to HT-4100's, but they're very different. The 4100 was a very problematic engine, which is probably why your warranty doesn't cover it.

Re: Engine name?

The L26 4.9 is the same engine as the 4.1 or 4100, but far bigger, with far more torque, and much greater reliability. Due to public perception of the 4100, neither the 4.5 or 4.9 were called 4500 or 4900. This served to keep these excellent motors from being associated with the 4100. However, all three of the above motors are from the HT- series.

I think 1987 was the last year for the 4100 in Deville. 88 - 90 had 4.5 and 91~95(?) got 4.9 with some N* mixed in until the switch to N* only. As fuzzy as this is, with a 1992 you can't have a 4100 so you're in the clear.

Re: Engine name?

Like others said, I don't think the 4.9 ever really had a "name." The 4100 and 4500 had the prefix of HT- to the front but GM never attached that prefix to the 4.9. The last year for the 4100 was the best and they have a much lower failure rate than the earlier ones. The 4.5 is a very good engine that will last a long time but you must make sure you do the maintenance on it or it will become troublesome very quickly. The 4.9 is pretty much bulletproof, but still keep up on the maintenance.

Re: Engine name?

L26 4.9
Although an improved and enlarged version of the HT4100, it was never called HT4900 by Cadillac.
A larger version, the L26 4.9, debuted in 1991 at 4.9 L with a square 92 mm (3.6 in) bore and stroke. Despite the fact that it had similar output to Allante's 4.5 L port fuel injected V-8, the 4.9 L engine represented a significant upgrade for the remainder of the Cadillac lineup. Horsepower output was up 20 hp (15 kW) from the previous 1990 4.5L engine and torque was up by 30 lb·ft (41 N·m), to 200 hp (149 kW) and 275 lb·ft (373 N·m). Both the 4.9 and 4.5 port fuel injected engines required premium fuel. The 4.9 produces its maximum horsepower at 4100 rpm.
The 4.9 was used throughout the Cadillac line. It was phased out in favor of the newer Cadillac Northstar engine; production ended in 1995.
