engines swap

I have a 98 concours i bought for parts due to front damage and a 97 deville vintage edition. I want to swap the concours engine & trans into the 97 base devill. Can i do this? Concour is a "9" vin with floor shift and base is a "y" vin with column shift.

Re: engine trans swap

Well they are both DeVilles. The base DeVille had a 275hp engine and the Concours had a 300hp engine from what I've read. Don't know about the trans differences if any. If the mounts are the same, I don't see why the swap couldn't be done. The PROM from the Concours would prolly be needed. It would be an interesting project!

Re: engines swap

There's more than meets the eye involved here.....the 2 years saw significant changes in drivetrain mechanical and electrical, so there's suspension and wiring (connector) work, too. The cooling system has differences in piping and radiators, as well as fan controls. As you know, the VIN 9 uses a 3.71 final drive and the VIN Y uses 3.11, so transmission and speed sensor output is different. The console change is also mechanical and electrical, as well as trim and carpet. The security, key, and sound system figures in here, too, as they're all inter-related.

I think the swap could be done with patience and a good shop to work in, but it will be way, way more than a simple drop-in.

Re: engines swap

ok i just finished doing a swap on mine, and according to the junkyard they say its a vin 9 motor, but then why when i recieved the motor the exaust manifold was different? the new motor i got was supposedly from the same year 2000 but then why did this new motor have a different setup, kind of like where extra fuel going out of the exhaust manifold and then being reused, does anyone know when this setup was started and ended because i honestly feel like these guys in the junkyard are sticking it to me..

Re: engines swap

If you have a pipe coming from the exhaust manifold (collector ??) that's the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) setup used to lower emissions of NO. It should feed to a valve on the top rear of the engine, near the throttlebody, and it requires an electrical hookup to the PCM (and maybe vacuum to the throttlebody). Different years have different EGR plumbing and operation.

Take a look at the pad on the side of the block just under the front of the right exhaust manifold....there should be a "VIN derivative" stamped there, and that's part of the original car number, so a GM dealer can tell you what engine you have.

Re: engines swap

yeap thats exactly what it is i just cant understand the guy at the junkyard that sold it to me said its from a 2000 cadillac dts vin 9, he even gave me the vin number and all, which i carfaxed, but on the motor itself doesnt say anything and then it has that EGR setup, and my car is also a 2000 cadillac dts but my old motor didnt have that setup? is that even possible for the motors to be the same year but have different options in that year like that EGR setup ?
