98 deville coolant leak?

Remove this ad
For about 3 weeks there has been a coolant puddle under the car (water pump area). Added coolant (about 1/2 gallon a week). Eventually, after 3 weeks of this the car overheated 260 degrees. The next day I replaced the water pump.

After engine has been shut off notice a puddle of coolant under the water pump area. After looking from under the car I noticed the coolant is leaking from behind the water pump (by the pulley). Seems to be filling up in the housing then dripping out between the pump and the pulley. Could this be the o-ring not sealed or the crossover housing leaking? This didn't leak for a couple days after the water pump was replaced. Help!

Re: 98 deville coolant leak?

What did you seal the front of the water pump housing with??

Did you replace the O-ring behind the water pump or did you reuse the old one?? It sounds like it just didnt seat right...

Re: 98 deville coolant leak?

Used a new gasket on the front. It's leaking on the back. I was worried it was the crossover housing, but after looking at the diagrams on here and your input makes me think the o-ring isn't seated right. I used a new one though, but had a little problem getting the pump in and set. The Haynes manual I used said to put the one tab at the 7 o'clock position and that doesn't work. I finally looked at the directions that came with the pump and it said to put it at the 1 o'clock position. Went in fine then. Must have damaged the o-ring then. I will check it in a few day's (when i have time) not driving it till I fix it though. Don't want to cause any damage.

Thanks Northstar.....

Re: 98 deville coolant leak?

Wow ranger agrees with me I am honored .

Anyway, hope it is the O-ring because I pulled the crossover off of my 99 DeVille and it is HORRIBLE!!! But it really sounds like the O-ring.

Let us know!

You see head gasket leaks if you run out of gas.

Re: 98 deville coolant leak?

took the pump off today and checked it out. the O-ring was not damaged, however I noticed the base plate that sets in the housing and locks in seemed to be bent slightly. It probably was not seated just right against the o-ring. Returned the pump (advance auto) and went to NAPA and put that one in. I'll let you know in a few how it is doing. fFingers crossed....

Re: 98 deville coolant leak?

Hope that solves your problem man, and if it is the crossover there is a real good thread on how to get it off and on as painlessly as possible, ill hunt around and see if I can find it..

Re: 98 deville coolant leak?

I wouldn't bet on anything with such little information. You said in another thread that you are "over it". You aren't over anything. That head gasket is eating you up inside and you still can't let go. I've never seen anyone take such pleasure in someone elses misfortune. Every time the subject comes up you just seem to glow and revel in it. I'm sure I'm not the only one to see it. Perhaps you are correct and you can laugh and dance at jpix's misfortune should that be the case. I prefer to spend my time here helping people.

Re: 98 deville coolant leak?

Thanks Northstar. Ran the car about 80 miles, continually adding coolant till the proper level. No leaks. Runs between 197* to 202* on the highway. Going up a very steep hill about 3/4 miles long at about 5 mph (driveway gravel road) the temp will climb to about 212-215. Everything seems fine. Driving up steep hills on the highway about 75mph temp stays at 197-205. Does that sound normal?

Thanks all for your input.
