Re: 98 deville coolant leak?

Ok fellas, Went to NAPA today and ordered the kit, should be in tuesday. However I drove the cat today about 20 miles round trip some highway and some in town, didn't get above 210. sidenote... When I park the car and let idle with temp at 205-208 the fans didn't come on. 38 degrees outside temp. turned the heat on and no fan, turned the a/c on 60 degrees and still no fan. could this be the problem, and what should I do to get the fan on.

Re: 98 deville coolant leak?

Fans should come on at about 224 degrees or anytime the A/C compressor is engaged. Try defrost. That uses A/C at any temperature.

Re: 98 deville coolant leak?

Oh that reminds me, When the surge tank boiled over coming up my 1/4 mile drive as stated above the temp reached about 235 and the DIC indicated (A/C OFF). Could this be any clue?

That just indicates that it overheated.

Re: 98 deville coolant leak?

I'm curious as to why you changed the t-stat if things went good on your 700 mile trip. Maybe had air trapped after stat install?

Concours,
when I changed the pump I re-installed the original t-stat and rubber gasket. When I got back within a week noticed small leak from around the rubber gasket where it bolts to the housing. Replaced the bad gasket with a new one and t-stat. Should have done it the first time.

Fans aren't kicking on in defrost mode nor a/c, but a/c wont kick in due to outside temp around 30.

I will drive it around today and keep an eye out, Combustion gas test coming Tuesday. got a feeling (wishful) that it's not a HG....

Re: 98 deville coolant leak?

Update:

Did the block test this morning and the fluid turned yellow.... HG is the problem. Thinking about a DIY job, but taking the engine out the bottom is scary. Going to call a couple home shop mechanics and see what they charge labor wise. After weighing all options it's not out of the relm of possibility to make the 7 1/2 hr trip to Onterio and see 97Eldorado.

Two things for sure: I do know I will keep the car and I will be using the Studs, anything other than that I will keep all posted.... Thanks.
