Fan stopped working

Have an issue with a 97 Deville. A couple days ago, I noticed the heat should have been on, and it was...to say the warm air was trickling in, but the fan was not on. Later, it came on for about 10 seconds then went off again. I checked coolant level and all, seems fine.

Tonight, I was driving and the problem persisted...no fan, and it came on once again for a few moments...off for just a second, then on again, then finally, it went off accompanied with a simultaneous sort of knock/klunk which came from under the dash somewhere on the driver side, as well as an immediate strong electrical burning smell. I found no codes, and I'm quite confident that the fan isn't coming on again anytime soon. I don't have the service manual for this model, so I don't know how to find or diagnose this. It is, with no doubt, electrical...perhaps some sort of fan module or relay...but beyond that guess, I need a hand with it.

Anyone able to pin down just what the problem is, and where exactly I find this part under there?

Your blower motor has passed into the great unknown.

Re: Fan stopped working

Thanks. I was just discussing it with my friend and we were thinking that too since it makes sense for the actual motor to be the source of such a burning smell. Thanks for the link too. Nothing like a PITA job in the winter

Re: Fan stopped working

Better now than January, when I had to do it. Although I do have a garage and heat when I need it, but there where a few cold trips to and from work till I got the part and time.

Re: Fan stopped working

I just did a more thorough reading of that link... Is it just the AC Delco motor that has been redesigned to be one piece, or does that go for aftermarket as well?

I was also confused by something I saw on rockauto.com. The "middle ground" blower on there is a Spectra Premium, it says "with wheel," (as all of them do), and also says "does not replace part 52494108," which is the AC Delco part. I'm confused as to what the point of that is...a replacement part that doesn't replace the part? It seems that the best option is GM Parts direct, which has the GM part for "only" $250, unless the aftermarket part...comes apart...

Re: Fan stopped working

I could not tell you if the after market blowers are of the original design or not. My guess would be that they are the new design.

Don't know what to say about "does not replace part 52494108". That makes no sense.

Might try http://www.gmotors.com for a better price, but I think that is about what I paid 3 or 4 years ago. They ain't cheap.
