Clicking / Rattling noise on right hand turning

Remove this ad
2001 DTS 62k

I have a new loud clicking / rattling noise, like a rock in a hubcap during a right hand curve.

I looked under the car and didn't see anything rubbing or anything. Is this a CV joint or something.

Re: Clicking / Rattling noise on right hand turning

It's either a CV joint or brake pads rattling in the caliper. (Check your lug nut torque...100 ft/lb.)

Re: Clicking / Rattling noise on right hand turning

Noise went away after i posted this but since the wheels have been on and off so much I will check the lugs. Front brakes may also need to be done, they've been on the car since I've had it.

Don't forget the possible starter drive sliding out and hitting the flexplate. I'm sure I've seen it on that new of a northstar. This only happens on RH turns. If it happens again regularly, try turning off the engine in the turn to see if it goes away.

Re: Clicking / Rattling noise on right hand turning

WHAT? really? Now that almost belongs on Ripley's. Turn of the engine in a turn? I'll have to find a parking lot big enough to do that.

Isn't the starter mounted front to rear? Why would that happen in a right hand turn?

Re: Clicking / Rattling noise on right hand turning

Starter is mounted front to rear of the engine. Left to right of the car. In the unlikely event that the drive went bad, a right turn would allow the starter drive to slide to the left, just like an object left on your dashboard and contact the ring gear, much like trying to start a car that is already running.

Re: Clicking / Rattling noise on right hand turning

I'm sure it is possible, though I would guess rare, but then again, Cadillac Tech has seen many more than I have.

It is rare, and those are just the ones to kick your butt. And, yes you should find a big low traffic parking lot.

Re: Clicking / Rattling noise on right hand turning

My noise only happened for a day and went away as soon as I posted this.

Yes, the issue they're referring to is a starter issue. Do you understand how a starter works?

Re: Clicking / Rattling noise on right hand turning

well my car isn't starting so I'm thinking the starter is the one to blame but with this car I've read it could be many many other things, i do remember when i parked it on a left side slope it was making that grinding rattling noise when i turned it off, since then it hasn't started im flying back home tonight so ill play around with it tomorrow, too bad my tt is sitting in a million pieces now i have 2 cars that aren't moving lol

Re: Clicking / Rattling noise on right hand turning

Well what happens, if it's even this problem, it the little drive gear that flies out to spin the flywheel when you start the car. Whatever holds that in must go bad or break so when you make a right turn, that gear slides out and bumps into the spinning flywheel.

That's the clicking / rattling we're talking about. To me it sounded just like a pebble in a hubcap.

It's held in by a spring.

Re: Clicking / Rattling noise on right hand turning

I figured that, like most starters. But I didn't want to speak out of turn, again LOL

So what does the spring break ?
