Cadillac Forums: Can this be? $2500 for Master Cylinder!!
Hi guys, I usually post in the other forum because I have a RWD Fleetwood, but my grandma has a 1989 FWD Fleetwood, with a 4.5L and around 140,000 miles on it. Its in OK shape, but now the master cylinder went out (WITH ABS) and the mechanic said he looked all over and the price for a new one is around $2000 plus labor!!! I didn't believe him so I called Heritage Cadillac, and a couple other dealers here in IL and they all said the same thing... 2000 for a new one. So, has anyone here replaced their Master Cylinder with ABS on a FWD Fleetwood, and if so where did you get it from. Also, does everything come "in one piece" or do I need something else besides a master cylinder, like a ABS module or computer, etc? He said just to look for the master cylinder. I hope that is not confusing. If anyone has any ideas/experience with these please post it.
www.rockauto.com shows several master cylinders for $ 30 - $80. BUT, when you get into also replacing ABS pumps and parts, the price goes into orbit. If the master cylinder is the only thing on the fritz, you get away easy. ABS is a different call, but I wonder how the shop(s) concluded that the AB system is also out of commission.

Hmm, that would have the Teves Mark II system which was an all-in-one unit. And to me they look VERY complex, so $2000 does sound feasible. I priced the ABS PMV Unit for my 93 a few months back, which BTW has the Teves Mark IV which is a seprate (Non all-in-one) system. The ABS unit for those is around $900.
Yeah, the ABS and master cylinder are integrated units. I thought those were Bosch systems but without the FSM in front of me or a car I couldn't tell you.
Those things are pretty crazy and not very reliable.
(IMHO)
I used to hate driving them and could tell when I was in one just by the feel of the pedal.
Whether or not to drop that kind of dough really depends on how much you love the car and what kind of shape it is in, it isn't just a master cylinder you are getting.
Yes that is probably the right price.

Yeah, we are probably going to end up getting rid of it... we talked about it and I don't want to see her put 3000 dollars into this car. It has nearly 140,000 miles on it, and the body is in decent condition, there is some bad rust in the B pillar where it meets the floor near the doors, and the inner fender wells under the hood are GONE, you can see right to the tire, probably from spending the last 8 years outside in Chicago. It runs fine, I think she had the heads done on it once, and trans is good, but it is just not worth it I don't think. It has a couple other minor problems as well. So... if anyone wants it for a reasonable price, post here and I'll contact you I guess, if not it may end up at Victory Auto Wreckers (if you live in Chicagoland I'm sure you know the commercial) Oh yeah it is baby blue with dark blue interior, and I think it has almost every option, but not sure.

LOL, I know exactally what you are talking about! That commercial is AT LEAST 25 years old, yet they keep using it. Btw I might be interested in some parts if you decide to part it out. Also, is it a 60 Special or just a regular Fleetwood?
OK, I will probably post it in the "for sale" section, because we would like to sell the whole car at once, but that might not happen so just email me at greekmeister_06@yahoo.com and I will take some pictures and send them to anyone interested. It is located on the border of Elmhurst and Berkeley, Illinois. I would like to see someone use it for parts than sell it to the junkyard. There are definetely some good parts on it. How do I know if it is a 60 special?
A few ways but here's the easiest: You know the plaque below the "Cadillac" on the back of the car? If it's a regular Fleetwood it'll say "4.5 Liter V8" if it's a Sixty Special it will say just that. It will also say that on the glove compartment door.
