91 Deville Distributor Coil Wiring diagram

Remove this ad
I have a 91 Deville with the 4.9L engine. I had an E41 error code, (Camshaft Position Sensor or Circuit error). I removed the sensor and tested it the way the manual said. It was good but some of the plastic plugs from the wiring harness disintegrated. I got a new OEM GM for $98 and replaced it but I didn't take a picture before disassembling it or sketching a diagram. I was able to connect all the other wiring plugs but there is another wiring harness that has a 3 plug connector on 1 end that connects to the coil and the other end goes inside the distributor. It has a 2 wire plug that connects to one side of the ignition module and a strap with a chip on it that bolts to the bottom of the body inside the distributor. There is one more red wire with a female spade plug that also goes inside the body that I can't remember where it connects to. I can't find any other male spade connectors to connect it to and my Hayes manuals pictures don't show where it connects. It shows the wire but it goes to the edge of the picture and is cut off. I tried google image and a few other places but I can't find a picture showing it's connection. Any help would be appreciated. I can't put the distributor back together until I find where it goes.

Thanks, Morgan

Re: 91 Deville Distributor Coil Wiring diagram

PS, the red wire comes from the B+ connection on the Coil cap. The harness GM part number is 10468045. I found it and a picture at acdelco.com

Hi Morgan. I was going to do some work on my distributer today but I had company and couldn't get to it. I'm going to try again tomorrow and I could help you then if you are still stumped.

Re: 91 Deville Distributor Coil Wiring diagram

I apprecite it. BTW, I looked at the wiring harness from the coil again. The red battery B+ wire goes to the ignition module as does the brown C- wire. The black ground wire goes to a lead that is bolted to the body of the distibutor and the red wire with the small female spade plug that I can't find out what it connects to, looks like it is split off of the red wire that is connected to the ignition wire. If it is a test lead or something, I can't understand how a hot battery lead could just be left unconnected inside the distributor. I would think it would short out agand the metal.

Re: 91 Deville Distributor Coil Wiring diagram

Hi Morgan, I think the wire you are describing goes to the plug on the center of the distributer. It's what I used to call the pick up coil but I believe it is the crank sensor on these engines. There is a plastic insert in the distributer housing to allow access to this plug. The wire looks red going into the distributer but looks more pink on the inside of the distributer. Leaning over the passenger side fender it is plugged on the left side terminal of this 3 wire plug on the pick up coil/crank sensor. Sorry I can't take a pic because my disposeable Canon camera died. If you are on here today and have more questions, feel free to hurry up and reply. I will have lunch before I put it back together.

Re: 91 Deville Distributor Coil Wiring diagram

I think your right. It's not the pick-up coil though. That is two wires with a two plug connector that connects to the ignition module. The camshaft position sensor that is bolted to the disributor body has 3 spade connectors. The other wiring harness I replaced has one 3 plug connector that connects to the camshaft position sensor but only two wires in it. The leftover wire with the female spade connector fits in the remaining plug slot and connects to the battery + connector on the cps. I didn't realize it because when I was removing everthing to test the cps, the three plug connector disintegrated. I didn't notice that the new one only had two wires going into the connector plug.
It's in the 90's outside right now so I'm going to wait for it to cool down befor putting it back together. I just hope that this fixes the E41, cps or circuit error code I'm getting. If that doesn't fix the problem I will bite the bullet and take it to the Caddy dealer to get it diagnosed. It might be the wiring from the new harness I just replaced to the ECM or the ECM itself. If it's that I might just get one from the junkyard and transfer the mem-cal from mine. It looks like it easy to replace.

Thanks for the help. You were a lifesaver.

Morgan
