Engine Stalls When Braking

Remove this ad
I just noticed recently when I am driving at night and touch the break pedal, the headlights dim for a second. This happens when in park also. And on occasion, at low speeds (i.e., coming to a stop or pulling into a parking space) the motor will stall when I touch the brakes. When the motor stalls, I loose the instruments memory, such as the clock, trip, etc. I'm thinking there is a short somewhere in the electrical. Anyone have any idea how to diagnose this or where to start? I have 83k on the cad. Other than the problem mentioned there are no issues with the car.

Have you retrieved your codes? If not do a search to see how to do it and find out what they mean. I think you hold down OFF and WARMER to bring them up.

Re: Engine Stalls When Braking

Possibly alternator? Take it to a shop and have them do a battery and charging system test. Should be a cheap test - if it needs an alternator, not so cheap fix. If you can display the voltage on the DIC pull that up and watch it during the conditions you describe.

Re: Engine Stalls When Braking

Any luck on this? Mine does the same thing. Every once in a while when I hit the breaks I'll have a total loss of power for a spilt second. It's almost like a ground wire is loose. I had a 90 Eldorado that had the ground wire get so coroded that it wouldn't get power one morning. I'm wondering if it might be the same problem on my 98 Deville. Sure wish I had a heated garage.

Re: Engine Stalls When Braking

Not yet. It's either been raining or 32 degrees outside. So without a garage, I've not been very motivated. But I need to diagnose this soon. I'm guessing it's got to be a ground fault. I'll keep you posted.
