Engine just turns off but electrics still on, 01 DHS

Remove this ad
I have a 2001 Deville DHS and it has this weird problem where the engine just turns off out of nowhere. I will be sitting at a stop light and the engine just dies, sometimes I don't even notice until I go to hit the gas. I can start the car right back up though. It has also done this on the highway but since the car is moving the engine will start going again like it got jump started (like when you pop the clutch on a manual car going downhill). The electrics do not turn off when this happens (radio keep playing, headlights still on, etc). Like I said before the car will always start right back up, sometimes it does a little clicking for a second and then starts back up. Sometimes it won't do it at all for a couple days, other times it does it every time I drive it. The check engine light is on now because of this. Also when this happens the battery light comes on. I've noticed that it usually seems to happen in the first five minutes or so of driving, then it won' do it again for the rest of the ride. Anyone have any ides what this could be. Thank you very much for any help.

Start by pulling the DTC's. You'll probably find one for a CKP (Crankshaft Position Sensor). Replace them both. Do a search for CKP sensors.
Decipher the DTC's here. http://myweb.accessus.net/~090/dtcobd2.html

PCM: CKP P0385, P0386, P0335, P0336, as above ^^^. (U-codes usually come from low module voltages, probably from cranking to start..)

$400 + or - at a Cad dealer, $100 DIY in an afternoon. IF you get those codes, do a search on www.rockauto.com, www.gmotors.com, www.gmpartsdirect.com or the Lindsay Cadillac link >>> over there.
