Onstar MIRROR Mystery hole AND VALET KEY QUESTION

I have a 2002 cadi deville dts with onstar, nav blah blah blah and i have 2 questions

1-I noticed that it seems as if my Onstar rear view mirror is missing a button or something on the right bottom corner. Its a little hole as if it once had an LED or something there once. Did it or what? help see attached image.

2-I had the dealer make me a valet key about two years ago, you know the gray ones. Well i just noticed yesterday that it is able to unlock my glove box!!!!!!!!! I havent checke dthe trunk but maybe that too. How is this? I thought its not supposed to open either. i compared my key and the valet key and noticed that they differ on one side but not the other. one has a slit down the middle and otehr side does not. Whats the deal??????
see attached for photo.

Anyhelp would be appreciated. Thanks

That hole is the light sensor that sees the headlights behind you, and darkens the mirror for you, just like magic. The valet key has different grooves so that it will only work in certain key cylinders, and not in others.

Re: Onstar MIRROR Mystery hole AND VALET KEY QUESTION

i posted tthe thread in another section in this forum and they told me-
"the Valet key is not supposed to start the car only open the glove, door and trunk."

My response was-
What???????? My grey valet key unlocks/locks glove, opens/ locks door and starts car. If it's supposed to have no ignition capablites, then why would it be called "VALET" key. Arent you suppossed to give the valet a "valet" key so that you can have them move your car for a certain distance, but have no access to the trunk and glove?

if your right, then the valet switch inside the glove box is useless because theyll still be able to unlock the glove with eiteher key. ( black original or gray valet)

if the grey valet key cant start the car that means you would have to give them the original black key, which will void your attempts to secure your trunk and glove for sure. Which is what im trying to prevent in the first place. Makes no sense.

From what i know its supposed to start car, allow it to drive for certain distance, and open door but not have access to trunk and glove.
If what you said is true............then the key is worthless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How are you supposed to keep people from getting into your trunk and glove when you use a valet, car wash, dealership, etc... if both keys have access to them but only the original (black) key can start it?

The valet key is supposed to unlock the doors and start the car. It is NOT supposed to work in the glove box or trunk.

Re: Onstar MIRROR Mystery hole AND VALET KEY QUESTION

Re: Onstar MIRROR Mystery hole AND VALET KEY QUESTION

Not trying to be a smart ass, but if you got the key two years ago and just realized it will open the glovebox, is it really that important of a flaw for you?

Maybe you valet park more than me (which is never). I have never used any valet key for a true valet purpose. In fact, 06 SRX and my 07 Lade did not even come with a valet key. Just my 01 SLS.

Re: Onstar MIRROR Mystery hole AND VALET KEY QUESTION

I dont know if you guys know but when you activate the valet lock inside the glove box it prevents the opening of the trunk by use of fob button, valet key and dash button, prevents the opening of the gas cap door, prevents the use of OnStar, and prevents the opening of the glove. Nice Security option, no?

That said...Ive been using the key and valet features for 2 years b/c i thought they were working properly. Not knowing that the valet key was working as the torn achilles tendon. I did not find out the know that the key was faulty until last week. So i guess ive had a false security for two years.

I take my car to the car wash every two weeks so i need the key to prevent access to the onstar, trunk, glove, etc.... I also use it when i take it to the Dealer or have the car serviced, etc....

I keep all my service invoices so i can prove that my dealer cut and activtated the key. It wont be a problem proveing that.....i think.

Re: Onstar MIRROR Mystery hole AND VALET KEY QUESTION

I can verify that the gray valet key allows me to drive anywhere for as many miles as I please, and it won't open the trunk or glove box. The mirror hole has a photoresistor deep inside so that the sensor responds to light from behind, not on the sides.....

There is a corresponding sensor that points to the front through the windshield. The system compares light from the front with light from the rear and dims inside and sometimes outside mirrors in response.

Re: Onstar MIRROR Mystery hole AND VALET KEY QUESTION

ya i know IT HAS NO DISTANCE LIMIT. I JUST SAID THAT FOR EFFECT.

SO YOUR VALET KEY DOES NOT OPEN THE TRUNK AND GLOVE HUH?

ARE YOUR VALET AND MASTER KEY EXACTLY ALIKE ON BOTH SIDES, ONLY ONE SIDE, OR NONE.

MINE IS EXACTLY ALIKE ON ONLY ON SIDE THE OTHER DIFFERS

also valet mode in my DHS locks out homelink garage door opener so the valet that nobody trusts can't find his way to your house and let himself/herself in through the garage.

I think that's an option you have to turn off or on. The valet key CAN work everything if enabled. I think I saw that somewhere.
