Exclamation No Way!!!

Remove this ad
Ok, so my car has just pushed me over the edge. On my way to class today I was cut off by a moron in a pickup entering the offramp of interstate 20. Slam on the brakes and just miss this idiot, but my brake pedal goes slack and the ABS goes into panic mode. Manage to miss an accident but my brake lines just exploded, and I'm not kidding, the line going to the rear brakes has a three inch long piece missing, and I am about ready to send this car to the heap. How much are new brake lines going to put me back? This is going to be the last repair I do for this vehicle. I've driven it not more than 20,000 miles and have put in $3,000 in repairs for everything from window motors, to switches, and now this. Seriously, this is ridiculous! Please, I need help...

Re: No #&@(ing Way!!!

find out what size the brake line is and get yourself a tube cutter and flare tool and cut out the bad section and replace with a new section. thats if its in a easy area to work on
still splicing in new sections is quite easy to do and cheap. You will have to rebleed the back brakes , you know how to do that right?

Re: No Way!!!

Sadly you aren't the first person this has happened to in a Deville between 94-2000 models, the lines aren't steel braided & rot away, this really should be a recall.

Re: No Way!!!

Do these rear brake systems have rubber sections like the front???? Or do the metal lines give out???/

Wow!!

If they are rubber, aren't they bolt on?

Thanks.

Re: No Way!!!

There are 4 rubber hoses that are serviceable.
The metal lines should not be "spliced" but replaced as complete sections.
The lines have to be fabricated by hand as they are not available in the segments they use to assemble the cars in the factory.

I'd advise DIY only if you know exactly what you are doing.
The car may have ISO flares on it which are tricky to do.
Older cars use a "double flare" which is easier, but still tricky.
I'd advise finding a shop who has someone comfortable with fabricating brake lines and having them make you a new one.

The problem is in areas where they salt the roads the pipes can corrode from the outside in.
When you have warm days in the winter and for sure in the spring you should get the undercarriage cleaned to remove the road salts and slow the underbody corrosion process.

Re: No Way!!!

Yeah, this is not uncommon. I had the same thing happen to me in my 93 Brougham. As stated, with the right tools, you can do it yourself. I will tell you that i had mine done at the dealer. Both rear lines replaced cost me something like $500.

Re: No Way!!!

Two lines right along the wheel well are completely gone, and the lines coming out from the ABS are getting there. Not to mention that the frame clips are gone underneath and one brake line was ZIP-TIED to a fuel return line!!! I''m going to get this priced but if it costs as much as I think, I don't think I'm going to cough up the $$$. I'm a college student, I need a reliable car, and this thing has been great for maybe one month out of the four I've owned it...is this common?!?

Re: No Way!!!

Rust is common. Yes. All that work you're talking about all 4 lines? You're probably looking at $700 - $1000 at a dealer. I will tell you I shopped around and the dealer was the cheapest on that one.
