    Is it the Starter?

I own a 92 Cadillac Sedan Deville and it's an automatic (not sure if they even make a manual for this model, but you'll understand why I stated it as you read on). Since I've brought the car, I've noticed that I have some starter issues. Sometimes when I try to start my car, it give off a grinding noise like if the car was already started or something. Usually I would just wait for a second and keep trying. Sometimes it takes a while and other times it takes just a couple of cranks. Well, my fiance told me whenever it happens to her she presses her foot on the brake and it starts right up for her. I thought maybe it was just a coincidence, because I didn't believe the startup system had anything to do with the brake. Well when the car wouldn't start up for me I decided to try what my fiance did. Sure enough it started right up. I just brought a used starter and I'm beginning to believe I don't need it and the problem is coming from somewhere else. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks for your replies.

    Re: Is it the Starter?

I would think that either the bendix on the starter is hanging up or the flywheel/bendix has been damaged. I would pull the starter and check the condition of the gear on the bendix and the flywheel. Might as well stick the other starter on there and see how it goes.

Stepping on the brake should make no difference at all. You will probably find this is just a coincidence. You might try stepping on the brake every time before you try to start to see if it ever makes the noise.
