Water pump needs replaced - help!

    To All,

I have a 1993 Deville with a 4.9 liter engine. My water pump needs replaced and I have never replaced one before. Guys I work with say that it's easy to replace - is that true? Can someone walk me though the replacement? I don't have the money to pay a pro - I'm no great mechanic - but I follow directions pretty well. I need replace this water pump tomorrow - by myself - please advise...

go to the all data site , for 14.95 you get a subscription to the service and you get proceedures and torque specs to do it , i will be replaceing mine in the next few weeks as ive got a bearing going bad in it and im useing the all data proceedures (doesnt look bad skill wise )

If it is the same as the '94, you have to remove the belt, of course, and then power steering pump pulley to get to the water pump. Otherwise it is not that difficult. Make sure to put a large pan underneath to catch all the draining coolant. I remove the battery because I like the extra space to work in, and I also used sealant along with the new gasket to be sure that the pump did not leak. Chiltons has the torque specs, too, although fitting a torque wrench on all those bolts was not possible for me, so I just made an educated guess.Good luck.

So we do have a timing belt right? Sorry Im a new 91'Devilion and dont know anything about Cadillac.

In order to remove our water pumps we need to remove the timing belts , is this correct?

The caddy my pops is suppose to be giving me may need some work. I asked him today how many miles are on it. {he's in another state} He said 155,000. Not to bad but then he said He had it for about 5 years and nothing has ever gone wrong with it and all he has ever done was change the oil. So Im thinking I need to change plugs, wires etc....:rolleyes2 So tell me. what tune up parts do these cars require??

i dont know about changeing the plugs just yet , thats a pretty difficult job getting to the rear bank of plugs. if you have some time and patince then you might give it a try

i sugest building your confidence first by changeing the fuel filter

but first and foremost get a reapir manual and read the proceedures and get a good idea on what your gonna do and see if your ok with it

Difficult is an understatement. I bought the plugs and looked back there, getting ready to do the job and just said forget it. I looks like a lot of work. When you do get your repair manual, please enlighten us on the proper procedure for changing the plugs on the rear banks.

Plugs can be replaced; it's just a major hassle, and requires a lot of time. I found a flexible adaptor for a my ratchet helpful.Don't be afraid to remove hoses and pieces that are in the way.

Try to get one of those Jeg's tool apron things so you can store your tools in it and you can lean on your car without destroying the finish.

Best way to do the plugs is from under the car with a long extension and a swivel or two, lot easier than the top. 5min job if you have a lift.

    Peace,

    Peace,
    D.
Please elaborate. I am interested to know how I would get to the plugs from underneath the car.
