    protective fillms?

What is the deal with the paint protection films that 3m makes. I have seen in some other forums people applying these to their cars for protection from chips and whatever. I am not familiar with these at all, but it does not sound to me that it can be that good for the paint. Maybe i am wrong. Any info.?

It's like a super thick coat of clear coat. Most of what you've read is 3M clear bra. It protects your paint, but it can still chip and crack (just like paint). You see the chips in the clear bra, but not in the paint. It has to be replaced periodically.

Has anybody used them? Curious about how they look, ability to polish, wax, etc..

ed: toss a message on the CTS-V board. Those guys love the 3M clear bra. They will be able to give you some insight with it. If I remember correctly, it's expensive with a VERY high profit margin.

Ed, the dealership I work with who sells expensive exotics has this film installed. price is around $800, you can wax/seal just as you do the paint. if you detail yourself make sure you work away from the cut line so you don't get product in the lines. and yes it does have to be replaced every so often. the upgrade from that is the new chip resistant clear coat which is invisible and is applied likepaint. cost however is double thatof the bra. I appear to have this stuff on the 2001 Eldorado that I just purchased.....and it's starting to peel away in several spots (almost looks like sunburned skin). Is there any way to just REMOVE it completely?

    Re: protective fillms?

The 3m Stuff is junk, it fades, and yellows and actually has a uv protectant in it so when the rest of your paint fades naturally, whats under the film stays nice and original....

I install a product called Clearshield, and it has a 5 year warranty, wont peel or crack, is waxable and is more optically clear than the 3m Product.

You can remove the film bu basically peeling it off, if it is hard and cracking it will take much longer and is very tedious. I have found that a fabric steamer works very well to remove it as it loosens the material better than drying it up like a heat gun would. You can purchase one from walmart for around $40 made by conair.
