how often?

quick question, just got a $2000 paint job on my 1985 sedan deville, looks great, the question is how often should i wax the car , i here many stories on this subject, like once a month, or your better doing it once a year and keep it clean, you decrease the life of the paint if you do it to much, and last question, my caddy has been painted for about two month now, do you think i can clay block it then wax it or wait a while longer, thanks guys and have a good one, mike just bought Turtle Wax ICE, looks like a good product, what do you think.

Re: how often?

Wax is supposed to last up to six months. I usually feel how rough the paint is getting after washes to tell when to wax it. You can not over wax a car, you can over polish but not over wax. Also if you are getting the car regularly washed, i would use instant detailer after each wash, this will extend the time between waxes. I am not sure you really need to clay bar the paint since it is so new. The turtle wax ice is nice, extremely easy to put on, kind of annoying to take off. I don't think it lasts as long as some other stuff out there. I only use zymol on my car, its worth the price, and its a cleaner wax, so it works almost as good as a clay bar to clean the paint. But its a wax too so your paint will be protected.

Paint sealants last UP TO six months. normal carnauba waxes will typically last UP TO 3 months. This is with OPTIMAL conditions, such as no heavy raining, uv exposure, snow, salt..blah blah blah. Plus washing with the absolute best shampoo's which will strip the least amount of wax off with each wash. All car washes will remove your last step product, or wax. It is inevitable. That wash and wax stuff is mumbo jumbo to make you buy it.

This really has nothing to do with waxing at all. Rather, when the paint is rough, you must clay it, and re apply your lsp. (last step product/wax/sealant)

True. Though unless you are using a rotary buffer, or using a DA polisher on the same spot for 5 minutes none of you will ever go through the clear on your car.

Good advice.

Most new paint DOES need to be clayed. Not to mention it most likely needs to be professionally polished as well as most dealership detailers have no clue how to properly polish paint. A lot of car are still transported by rail and thus the term RAIL DUST. Referring to the ferrous (metal) particles from rail cars, and brake dust as well that settles into your cars finish; giving it the rough feeling mentioned above.

I've never used it personally but have read reviews on it and they are all piss poor by people who have used other decent over the counter products. From what I remember, most people said it stained trim, was a pain to remove, and durability just wasn't there. Pick yourself up anything from Meguiars. Whether it is there NXT paste, #20/21 sealant you will be happy. Hope this helps.

Re: how often?

That's a very good paint job especially for macco, hopefully the paint will last and look good for many years. I hope you have better luck than I did with macco.

Re: how often?

Wow, that looks great. If it wasn't for the broken trunk lock crest, I'd think it was a new car.

Re: how often?

hey guys, it was the signature paint bc/cc. remember alot of maaco body shops are privately owned, do some research, where i went there was a lot of cars for repair or paint, cars that where $50,000. for example new lexus ls430 that was in a accident getting work done, many cars all of different values, i live in west palm beach florida there is a lot of money in this area, and there for many expensive cars in for repair. i have had this car for 22yrs now and it looks just as good if not better this when me and my dad pick it up from the dealer, it does have a four year warrenty, i hope i dont need it but will do maintenance on the car (wax hand wash, car cover, garage) etc, these kind of things are hit and miss, you can pay $1500 on a paint job and have it last 10yrs, or pay $4000 on paint and have it last 3yrs, you just dont know, do your research, ps new trunk crest lock cover is installed, brought it back to maaco and they installed it for me, and brand new left and right cornering light are now installed, which looks great, the ones in the picture are in the garbage. well have a great one, mike

Re: how often?

I use to wash once a week, but a wash and wax every two weeks is also good.

I've heard bad things of Turtle Wax's ICE products, particulary, and I quote, "they named it just right, cuz the sun just melts this crap off your car." Or something to that extent. Link is here:

http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/sho...turtle+wax+ice

Though he used it on the trim, not sure about the paint. But heres another where it was used on the paint:

Both with pictures.

Re: how often?

I bought the Turtle Wax Ice last year and waxed the car in like September. It still looks great even after several snowstorms. It doesn't offer up the best shine I have ever seen, but it goes on easy, comes off easy, and is very durable. You also use very little product to cover the car twice. This just might be the first wax product that I use the entire contents of.
