Cleaning the vinyl roofing

hey i'm just wondering what you guys would recommend using to clean the vynil roof of my '85 brougham... i tried comet cleanser and it got a lot of the grime and dirt out of it but its still a tad discolored as you can see from the pic below. i'm in the process of restoring it and i'm trying to get it as white as the car itself.

Re: Cleaning the vynil roofing

Wow, I would love to have a car like that.

As far as cleaning in, I think you would have good luck with clorox cleanup. I have used it for some similar cleaing and the bleach action did the trick. I don't know how safe it will be though. So try a little on a small out of sight section and then go from there. Also, I wonder what the experts think about using a bleach product on the vynil. I would also wait to see what they think.

Re: Cleaning the vynil roofing

A VERY mild solution of bleach can be used, if soap and water with a little elbow grease don't remove all the stains. Be vigilent to condition the vinyl after you clean it though, make sure you put some vinyl treatment on it. You want something to keep dirt off and UV protection. Like all care-car products, stay away from solvent-based products, go for the water-based ones.

Re: Cleaning the vynil roofing

The best stuff to use to clean it is soap and water and a brush if its really dirty. If youre going to put anything on it after you clean it use non silicone dressing.

How about a new top since you are restoring it. They only run like $1500. :2cents:

A lot cheaper than that, a new top should be less than $500.

Are you for real? Where did you get that quote? I was quoted $750 just to have the little landau quarter top redone on my '83 Coupe Deville.

Re: Cleaning the vinyl roofing

Didn't DopeStar have his top redone for like $300 or something like that? I might be completely nuts, but I thought one of us D-body guys had his redone for cheap.

Re: Cleaning the vinyl roofing

I don't remember it being that cheap... then again my short term memory is blown lol. I remember DS getting his top done, but that seems below dirt cheap.

I use RaggTopp and have been very pleased, one of many sites that tell about it.

Re: Cleaning the vinyl roofing

Soap and water only gets dirt off. His top is clean, it's just stained. Using soap and water now would be like trying to wash off a scratch in your paint.

I used the cloth top version of RaggTopp on my Phaeton and it worked great. But if you use it, be sure to get the water repellent too.
