Sunroof Leak

Remove this ad
I have a 2000 DTS with a sunroof. Today we had a short but strong thunderstorm with heavy rain. When I went to get in my car, I noticed that the interior sliding sunroof cover was wet along the front edge. I then saw a drop of water where the pod is with the sunroof switch. How long do the seals last around the sunroof? Is this something I can fix myself? Any advice appreciated.

Re: Sunroof Leak

You can clean the soft rubber seal with either ArmorAll or Son of A Gun and also carefully rub a bit around the lip of the opening.

Now, go to your local hardware store and get a roll of .080" weed whacker monofilament. Cut off an 8 foot piece and slightly burn the ends to remove any sharp edge. Use the line to "rod out" the drain tubes at each corner of the sunroof tray. The rear tubes are murder to find...kneel on the seat with your head up in the open window and use a good flashlight. The front ones run down the windshield pillars to inside the fenderwell liners. The rears go back down each quarter panel sail area into the fenderwell.

Do not use compressed air to clean the tubes: you will probably blow the tube(s) off the tray nipples and then you're in the headliner removal business.
