Re: 09 will cost $6k more in fees alone!

Congratulations, tree huggers! You can now save $200 per year on gas (which will have 0 effect on the environment or oil consumption), and pay $4,000 to $10,000 extra for the privilege! I hope you plan on keeping your car for 20 years in order for the fuel savings to add back up to the premium you paid.

This accomplished nothing except gutting the American Auto industry and inflating the price of cars, all so Politicians can brag that they're "green". Hooray for stupid "feel good" legislation!

Uh yeah, that increase doesn't need to take effect until 2020......so this thread is wrong.

Law went into effect in 07.

You really think your gonna get the bill for the R&D after everything is done?

Thread is not wrong.

If you have proof it is I will lock it or poof it.

I see that in new car development. I doubt that the '09 V just automatically jumps $6-10G more...

You're kidding about this law affecting the new CTS-V, right? This law which was signed into effect a month ago sets new CAFE standards to be reached by 2020. The CTS-V obviously does not come close to meeting those numbers and makes no attempt to even try to be fuel conscious. The cost Lutz is speaking about is development and implementation costs over the next 12 years for future vehicles not even on the drawing board yet. I suspect to see these added costs to pertain to all automakers, and certainly won't show up in 9 months on the 2009 CTS-V, or for several years.

Cars will only get better. We're going to see more engines with direct injection, more turbochargers and more superchargers. Six, seven, and eight-speed transmissions will become commonplace. There will be more hybrids - in everything from subcompacts to SUVs - more clean diesels and even electric cars coming down the pike (Tesla). There is a lot of interest in hydrogen (BMW 7 Series) and propane powered vehicles(Foose/Mother's 1000 hp '70 Chevelle). Unfortunately, progress costs money.

Re: 09 will cost $6k more in fees alone!

Be prepared to see something like the gas guzzler slapped on the 04 and 05, on top of anything else.

GM is not gonna foot the bill upfront for all the R&D as was stated.

I just posted a link.

Do I think your gonna be hit right off the bat with a $6k upcharge?

Of course not.

However, without the price even being announced who knows?

GM is usually the first to announce anything in the car business.

I edited the title so you can stop the flaming.

Yeah, thread was dead wrong.....the $6000 he refers to is the AVERAGE cost passed on to the cars that are going to be impacted by these new requirements......11 years from now......not for a current car being produced. Might there be some extra R&D cost being done now that gets passed on to current cars? Sure, but it's it's going to be peanuts compared to the $6K average per car later on.

Re: Will the 09 cost $6k more in fees alone?

Auto makers will always pass the costs along to the consumer, it is called inflation. They say that everytime the government mandates something, which tells you something about what happens when the government gets involved.

I just hope gas mileage misers don't buy the new V. I can't complain about a car that gets 20mpg or so on the highway and has 550 hp.

Keep in mind Lutz is also lobbying for government aid and for sympathy.
