Re: Surprise in Diff fluid

That is normal for the V diff. I changed mine within 5K miles and it looked like that. Change it often.

Re: Surprise in Diff fluid

I don't think it is normal to have pieces of broken steel stuck to the drain plug.

Some worn steel sludge sure.

Re: Surprise in Diff fluid

I think Norm was refering to the sluge. My hope is that it was in the fluid when someone filled it last and it sank right to the bottom

I am allowed to perform my own maintenance... At this point I see no reason to believe my dealer will not cover me on this or any other issue under warranty. Dependent on the level of customer service we recieve I will probably buy my next one at that dealership. They have been nothing but on Q so far as I would expect fom Cadillac. They have a SCCA car and seem to know the V well.

They might recognize where that piece came from.

Re: Surprise in Diff fluid

That larger piece would concern me as well, but the sludge is very typical.

FYI, here is the used oil analysis results of my initial diff fluid change:

Given the high wear, if you haven't changed out your diff fluid yet, I'd give it serious consideration.

Opps! Didn't see the broken gear piece. Sludge is normal though.

Re: Surprise in Diff fluid

It's clear in the second picture and I changed my fluid at 6K and it had about that much sludge, I'm guessing it came from the clutch pack but I'm not sure.

The Metal is bad and it makes you wonder when another piece will come off and how big will it be????

Warranty is a good thing.

Re: Surprise in Diff fluid

I agree, the big piece of metal is bad...I would take it to the dealer with the pictures. I am having mine changed tomorrow...hopefully no big chunks fall out! I will let you guys know.

Fyi: Synthetic or dino oil for the rear? I lean to synthetic. What's your thoughts?
