I don't have a CTS yet (stongly thinking of getting a new one though) but as far as NAV goes, here’s my 2 cents. I think it changes from person to person and where you live. When I bought a G35 back in '03, I HAD to have NAV so I got it mainly for the coolness factor. After driving it the year or two before I sold it, I must admit I rarely used it. My next vehicle did not have NAV and neither does my current one. For me, I really haven’t missed it. If I get a CTS, I doubt I will pay the extra for it.
That said, my wife have used the NAV in her ’07 Lexus many times when we were traveling and most times it has helped out tremendously. A few times it has really gotten us out of a pinch and saved us a lot of time. Well, except the last time when it routed us to get on an interstate, travel to the next exit, get off, then get back on the same interstate headed back in the other direction to the original exit. When it routed us to repeat the loop, we just turned it off and bought a regular map.
For me and for my driving habits, NAV is a great thing from time to time but I’m not ready cough up the extra $$ for it on my next ride. As far as OnStar goes, I have it in my H2 and have never used it. I only drive it locally, I know where everything is and I havn’t had an emergency. I still love having OnStar just in case. Like I said, I think the need for this stuff changes from person to person and where you live. As far as the coolness factor, the NAV thing wore off fast for me when I had it but that’s just my opinion.
You make an excellent point. I want NAV -- need it, really -- because my business requires me to drive frequently to places I've never heard of, much less been to. I've gotten into the habit of punching in the address and not worrying about where I'm going. But, if you drive the same route to work every day, and rarely go anywhere other than places you know like the back of your hand, then it would be a waste of money -- like a deaf person buying the upgraded stereo because it looks cool. Decide whether you need it before you buy it.
Has anyone found on the '08 CT'S Nav system that it can not navigate to. On mine the back ground map has the areas in light blue and the system "says navigation not available in this area"
I thought about adding the NAV screen as well. I decided not to once I found out it costs $3,600. Yeah, it's cool, but not that cool. I'll stick with OnStar. Their new MapQuest feature is a nice upgrade for this product.
If I recall correctly it was Union City, TN. Navi had that particular area as the plant I was going to is at least 20 years old i took me there with no problems. Not the CTS...

Remember that the NAV system includes the upgraded stereo. According to the Cadillac website, the audio system with NAV is $3145; the audio system without NAV is $1000. Both include the 40GB HDD. Difference is $2145 -- still expensive if you don't really need it.

Maybe I'm not understanding exactly what was missing, but I was able to find detailed maps for Union City, TN, in my NAV system. Database Version 8.63.12.022807.19.
What was weird about it was the fact that I could see the map but the NAV said something about "navigation not possible" or so. Garmin NUVI worked with no problem out there..
Have you gone in for the update to the Nav system yet? I haven't had a chance to drop mine at the dealer yet but a number of these little issues are supposed to be fixed by the software update. A couple of times on my trip south I got the cannot calculate route message and I had to cancel and then resume guidance to get it to recalc; the update is supposed to take care of this bug.
