tires rubbing

Remove this ad
Hey all newbi here, I have a 05 cts and just got some 20's with 245/35/20 and everytime i go over a dip in the road the back rubs. i was thinking of grinding down the lip at the bottom of the fender. Is the an easier way to get rid of the rub. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Re: tires rubbing

Your going to have to roll the fenders. I had the same issue and found it damn hard to get a shop to do it. There are DIY kits out there. What is the offset of your 20's? Thats your issue. Someone here did use a cutting wheel and a grinder to remove the fender lip, seems like your better know what your doing if you do that.

I took the wussy way out and sold my wrong offset 20s, rather then rolling or cutting my car up.

Re: tires rubbing

My cts had some ragged edges on the inner portion of the rear passenger fender. I just wrapped a towel over a hammer, taped off the area inside the fender lip and "coerced" it upwards. It stopped touching the tire after that point. All in all it was a minor rub and was due more to the variation in manufacturing of the fender than the offset of the wheels. I thought the 05's and up had cleaner edges on the fenders that wouldn't rub??

I wouldn't recommend hammering it out on your own unless you are comfortable with it. Don't want to mess up the paint. Rolling the fenders is a safe way to go, plus you can have the fenders rolled and flared a little too. That way the 20's are nestled better under the fender and won't rub if you should chose to go with a 265 out back.

Re: tires rubbing

I have the same size tire on some vogues and I had the car dropped abut an inch. For a while I had the same problem, but only on the right rear. The edge of the inside fender would catch the edge of the tire. It would literally slice little strips of tire every time I hit a bump. Like some of the members have said, not all fenders are the same and have some defects. I pinpointed the deformity on my fender and had a shop just hammer it up a little. Took care of the problem. So if it’s not happening on every side, which it shouldn’t. I would try to find out which tires are actually rubbing and look for a defect on that fender.

Re: tires rubbing

Wussy way out? IMO if you have to cut, roll, grind, lift, change anything at all on your vehicle. You are molesting your car just to put rims on it. If you are ignorant enough to buy the wrong wheels? You should get different wheels. AmerLux, you did the right thing. NOT the wussy thing. I have 20's on mine and have had to do NOTHING other than get the proper wheels and tires. They never rub EVER.

Re: tires rubbing

xshrpshtr why would you say i'm ignorant of buying the wrong tires. I was told by th company i bought the wheels from these were the right specs. I guess they were wrong. so if you can't help me with a solution please do not reply to the thread. On the other hand if you can give me some positive feedback i welcome it.

Re: tires rubbing

Shooter, yeah its a hard subject for me to deal with. Since the Foose Wheel f-up, i've been on the stockers. The $$$ i got for them went to moving to NC from Tampa, FL. Bought a house up here and all the extra Caddy $$$ i had is tied up in the house. If i could have found a good shop in tampa to do a pro job on the roll then i'd still have the 20's. Im gonna have to wait until my money catchs up with me.

Oh well, patience is a virtue and "All virtue is summed up in dealing justly."- Aristotle

Greensboro, NC and the damn 16's

Tampa and the 34mm Foose's

Re: tires rubbing

my 22's don't rub and i've probably got more weight in my trunk than anyone else (and i drive around with a full load of passengers regularly). don't rely on a wheel company to get you the right size rims. they'll say just about anything to get you to buy rims from them. all the research on the proper rim size for the cts has been done right here, by cts owners, on the forum.
