Check Engine Light

Hello. Need some advice please. While driving to work a few days ago, I noticed that my dash display was saying "gas cap open" and a few seconds later my check engine light came on. When I got to work, I checked the gas cap and found that it was indeed not fastened tightly at all. I must of forgot to screw it back on completely i guess when I filled the tank up. Anyways, how do I get my check engine light to turn off???

According to the driver's manuel, the check engine light will come on due to emmisions issues. Also says that the indicator should turn off after a few car trips when the gas cap is tighten.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: Check Engine Light

The CEL will only come on if the "issue" is present for 3 ignition cycles, and it comes on for many reasons including gas caps and catalytic converter inefficiency.

It should go off by itself 3 iginition cycles after you tightened the gas cap. If it doesn't, go to an autozone and have the code read.

Re: Check Engine Light

^ oop, someone beat me.

You probably have a DTC P0442 set. ...evap codes.. we see this alot. Failed purge solenoids, loose gas caps, e.t.c.

The PCM sends a class 2 message to the driver information center (DIC) illuminating the Check Gas Cap message when any of the following occur:
• A malfunction in the EVAP system and a large leak test fails
• A malfunction in the EVAP system and a small leak test fails

Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC

• The control module turns OFF the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) after 3 consecutive ignition cycles that the diagnostic runs and does not fail.
• A current DTC, Last Test Failed, clears when the diagnostic runs and passes.
• A history DTC clears after 40 consecutive warm-up cycles, if no failures are reported by this or any other emission related diagnostic.
• Clear the MIL and the DTC with a scan tool.
