2007 speaker upgrade

Remove this ad
I picked up a 2007 CTS without bose audio. I'd like to upgrade the door speakers with aftermarket ones.

Can anyone tell me the RMS output power from the stock radio for the door speakers? The impedance of the factory door speakers?

I suspect almost any aftermarket speaker will work and handle the power without distortion but I'd like to make sure.

Thanks.

Re: 2007 speaker upgrade

I actually don't know 100%...but I *think* its somewhere around the neighbor hood of 40 watts RMS?

But..let me just say..if you're going to go ahead and replace the stock speakers, you might as well run an amp to run your aftermarkets...as it's not going to sound any different really, unless you amp them. 40 watts on a speaker that should get 60-80RMS isn't going to do a thing for you.

You might as well just do it all the way if you're going to.....just my .02 tho

Re: 2007 speaker upgrade

yup.....Your taking about 40w PEAK and going to send it to aftermarket speakers that need about 65RMS(constant) or about 120w peak...and your going to find that you wont be able to turn up your system as loud as you would like...why? because with not giving the speakers the power they need, they will distort as you turn the volume up...then you will blow them...power doesnt blow speakers, distortion does

Well then you ask, why dont I just get a lower wattage speaker? Even the cheapest Jensens for $20 from the fleamarket require more power and are better than what you have in there. The difference is that the stock speakers are matched with the wattage of the amp, so they sound good together.

If you dont want to run an amp, I would get a set of Infinity Kappa series speakers. The will sound better than stock and they have a high DP rating meaning they utilize the power they get better, and sound louder....so even at the lower volumes, they will be louder.

I would honestly just amp it....if you dont have the money, get some good speakers, save your money, and then amp it

Hope that helps

Re: 2007 speaker upgrade

The "problem" with the stock setup is that the sound is a bit warm, meaning bass and low midrange heavy. And at medium to high volumes, there is distortion. It sounds like the bass is messing up the midrange production. I don't need the volume to be higher, just a more balanced tone and cleaner sound. I think the speakers are the source of the problem I described, but I don't know for sure.

I had the infiniti kappa's in mind because of their high sensitivity. Do you think this will give me the improved sound I want?

I am willing to add amplification if I need to. Money is not the issue, it's just much more hassle to install an amplifier. Speakers are easy to replace.

Re: 2007 speaker upgrade

Sounds like you just answered your own questions to me! :-)

Go ahead and put the amp in..and the aftermarket speakers...and you won't be saying any of that...... The Kappas will be perfect indeed.
