Boiling Beats Baking (For fog lense removal)!!

Remove this ad

At least for removing your old fog lenses it does!

After much frustration with baking my fogs to remove the lense, I decided to boil them. Here is what I recommend:

1) Get pot big enough to set the fogs in (lense side down)
2) Fill with enough water to just cover the old lense and lip (approx 2 inches)
3) Bring water to a rolling boil withot fogs in it (water boils at 212f)
4) Remove from heat
5) Add fog light
6) Remove after 5 min
7) Pry lense off.

Note: You may need to put it back in the water 1 or 2 more times as it starts to cool off when you are prying. Get the water boiling again first and only keep it in for 2 minutes at a time.

Use caution, the silver reflective surface inside the housing comes off real easy. Don't use windex. Don't rub hard. I wiped my with windex and noticed the silver started to come off.

Re: Boiling Beats Baking (For fog lense removal)!!

boiling? I never would have thought to do that.

When I baked mine, it took me a while to get the first lense off. I took it out of the oven and put it back in the oven about 8 times before I finally got the lense off.

I then put the second housing in the oven and started cleaning the new lenses. Then I started working on cutting the metal divider between the fog and DRL on the first housing. I finally got finished with cutting the divider up and remembered... I LEFT THE OTHER HOUSING IN THE OVEN!!!

the second lense came right off no problem

Will this work for the side markers? I want to put on some tinted ones.

The side markers on glued with a different glue. I wound up hitting the amber lense with a hammer and pulling the pieces off. I treid the oven and heat gun first, the hammer was the fastest.

Re: Boiling Beats Baking (For fog lense removal)!!

Really? You can just smash the amber on the sidemarkers? Your not going to break the "housing"??

Re: Boiling Beats Baking (For fog lense removal)!!

Use a small hammer. The housing is pretty tough but don't over do it. I think the lense is heat-fused to the housing, it's not like the soft glue used in the fog assy. Anyway, a small hammer or the the head of a pair or channel lock plyers should be enough force to break the amber part.
