Too much oil can be just as bad as no oil. There is a point where the oil can reach the height of the crankshaft, and this whips the oil into a froth. Oil with lots of air in it does not lubricate well. Tiny little air bubbles in places they should NOT be can really do a number on an engine. The result can be the same kind of problems you would have running a car without oil...e.g. bearing failure, piston seizure
I wouldn't really worry about 1/2 a quart too much. But who knows how much they put in? Did he redo the oil and properly fill it?
