| | | Remove resonator or not? hey guys just got 2 magnaflow mufflers and all new pipe from the cat back and it sounds pretty good.
the guy told me that he could remove the resonator to give it a little more and make it sound nicer.
has anybody done this? does it sound good or should I just leave it the way it is? the guy isn't charging me anything to do it. I have to go back there tuesday to install one of the tips he didn't have in stock so he said he would do it for free tuesday when I bring it back in.
what you guys think? I have a 04 3.6L |

| | | Re: Remove resonator or not? My personal opinion is that it will not sound nicer, but raspier. The whole point of the resonator is to get rid of higher frequency content in the exhaust note, and function as sort of an X pipe by mixing the pulses of the two banks of exhaust. It will have a much deeper overall tone if you keep the resonator.
Basically, the resonators position defines the frequencies that it dampens. If it's 5 feet away from the exhaust ports, the speed of sound in air is roughly 1100ft/sec, then 1100ft/sec divided by 5 feet gives you 220Hz. Everything above that frequency is attenuated. Everything below that frequency passes to the rear mufflers. Assuming those are 10 feet back, they only need to attenuate frequencies from 220Hz down to 110 Hz. Everything above 220Hz is basically double attenuated, which gets rid of most of the raspy sound. An exhaust note that is purely low frequencies sounds best, IMHO. |

| | | Re: Remove resonator or not? thanks I think I'll keep the resonator on there since I like the deep tone it has right now. I don't think a raspier sound is what im looking for.
thanks for the explanation. |
