Gotta agree with that. If you have a 3.6 and are getting 26/29 that is good! I would be more than happy with that.
I have tried really babying the crap out of mine and can't even hit 20 average. And I mean REALLY babying it.
What gets me is I had a 3.2l CTS that I drove the same route, same driving style (actually drove it harder) and did get 26 average!
So why is mine now so low...I don't know....but it seems most have mileage similar or even worse than me. The dealer tells me my mileage is normal and it seems that most are getting similar or less.
Fairly aerodynamic sedan, under 4000 lbs, "only" 255 HP, V6, Manual trans, Economy driving style...this should be getting better mileage.
Is your driving all highway? |

No. I would say 1/2 highway, 1/4 backroads, 1/4 stop and go. I suppose, to be fair, I should qualify my mileage by stating that I drive around 62 on the highway with cruise set. In moving rush-hour, I do about 50-55 with cruise, as I watch all the idiots going flying around me only to slam on the brakes 6 car lengths ahead and do the same speed as me. then brake, gas, brake, gas...
My average was showing 27.5 a couple days ago. My wife took the car, and when she came back it was at 23.1. Moral to the story is how you drive the car has everything to do with it. |

Nor do I floor it, but accelerating from stops is such a small percentage of your throttle time that it really has a small effect. The dominating factor is what you do when cruising. Use the cruise and go with the flow. |

At 65MPH cruise set, 6th gear, my DIC will say 24MPG instant. The most I can get it to cruise at is at about 45MPH, 6th gear (only 1200 RPM) where the DIC will show 28MPG. No way I can average what you are.
Unless I am missing something your car just gets better mileage. |

There are production variances, and maybe my engine just got put together better. The tranny didn't, as I have already had the TC replaced. Maybe the final drive in top gear of the auto plays a part. IIRC, isn't the auto rated to have 27 hwy, and the standard 26? |

Yeah at time my readout on the highway reads 70 mpg, but that is at that instant.
I am about to take a trip from Houston to Dallas, non-stop and I will probably cruise at 70, but I will get you details as soon as I find something out.
With city driving in my 3.2, I know, I know we are discussing a 3.6, but I thought I might as well throw in my inferior older engine for comparison sakes, I probably get 18 or so.
Most of my driving is Highway @ 70 mph and with the very little city driving I average about 22 mpg.
45,00 miles on the odo.
And on the acceleration vs cruise speed, come ON!
It takes ALOT more fuel to get something moving to a certain speed than it does to keep it at a given speed.
I am definitely thinking about getting a 3.6 in the future, so I am very intereseted in your findings/results.
Thanks! | Well I just got back from my trip.
Me the wife, two kids a dog and all our luggage in my 2003 3.2 Auto with 47,000 miles.
I averaged 23.3 on the way there and 23.8 on the way back.
I had about 10-15 stops each way as I was travellinh through small towns and such! |
