Can you estimate the size of these bearings?
Not many things on GM cars use an actual "ball" bearing.
None that you might find on the floor I can think of.

Re: Called Dealer About Recall

Hey, thanks for all of your advice on the forum.
I took my "04 CTS w/85K to the dealer yesterday w/whine, told me today I need $1,800 repair to replace bearings in differential. Is mine too old for GM reimbursement? I love the car but afraid of repeat repairs.
Is it a simple fix?

Only 05 and ups are covered by the recall, I have a 04 myself. But what month was your car made? Also was the rear seal ever leaking? If late 04 (like a month before it was called a 05) and/or if the rear seal was replaced under warranty then you can call cadillac and they MIGHT help. They caddy, know of this problem so they might cover it or offer a discount.

Re: Called Dealer About Recall

Putting bearings in the rear diff? Nothing "simple" about it.
Not sure if you can do much to get them to help you with that many miles on it.
Just make sure they are going to stand behind their work, meaning... if they do the fix, and the car still makes the noise, who pays for the next attempt?

Next, the problem is a leaking differential seal, if you see a leak, get it fixed... if you are out of warranty I can almost guarantee that GM will have a repair cost reimbursement process. If you are in warranty, take the thing in to get it fixed for free, if it is leaking there is a current bulletin on how to fix it.
If it isn't leaking, what is to freak out about?

The whole issue is based on a leak.
Half the underside of the car will be covered with differential lubricant before any damage will occur to the rear drive axle.
If you are actually concerned about it, have them raise the car and verify that the differential is properly filled and take a valium.

Lastly, for you guys in the cheap seats.... THE RECALL HASN'T EVEN BEEN RELEASED YET.
Here is some text from a news website:

I am not sure what calendar some of you are using, but mine says it is still JANUARY. On Earth, we use a concept called "linear time". That means we can't access February until January is completed. When March gets here and your car still hasn't been fixed, then maybe I could see what the complaint is here.
Well stated.

Re: Called Dealer About Recall

Had my '06 CTS 6MT into the dealer for an annual inspection about a week ago, and they notified me of the recall. They explained my vehicle was included, so I told them to go ahead and repair it. Ever since, I have had a "rumbling, roaring" noise in the rear during turns with no acceleration. As soon as I hit the gas, the sound disappears. The sound is almost deafening. I have an appointment to bring it in Tuesday to the dealership. I have the sport package (which includes a limited slip diff.). Does this matter? I am positive I read in the manual that the "limited slip diff" requires a certain amount of "limited slip diff" fluid? Could it be possible the tech forgot to add "limited slip diff" fluid while filling it back up? Anyways, just looking to see if anyone else has had this problem, or if anyone can give me a heads up on what is going on... thanks in advance!

Re: Called Dealer About Recall

Fritze, as you were describing your problem I was thinking the same thing; probably didn't add the limited slip 'special' fluid. Hopefully that's all your problem is. If not, I'm sure they will still fix your car under the guidelines of the recall as you didn't encounter the problem till after they replace the seal.

Re: Called Dealer About Recall

fritz, I'd bet money they didn't add any friction modifier.
Take it back and remind them.
