Winter - Will 16" fit big Sport Perf Brakes

Remove this ad
I have an 07 with the Sport Performance Luxury...package which has the big brakes (as I understand it) and the 18" wheels.

Can I put 16" CTS wheels on it for winter or will it hit the rotor. When I feel the rotor to rim clearance it's very questionable that there is an inch worth of clearance there.

I have searched high and low for a difinitive answer so any help is welcomed.

Thanks,

Dave.

Re: Winter - Will 16" fit big Sport Perf Brakes

dslater,

I think what you need to do is swap me your factory 18" rims for my factory 17" sport/performance rims and give me......say $100 and YOU pay the shipping. This way you won't have to worry this winter and you can rest assured that I will be sadly riding around on some newer rims

Kidding aside, I seriously doubt you can put anything smaller than a 17" rim on your car without clearance problems.

Scott

Scott, you must be in sales as your pitch was almost compelling

Thanks for the quick response.

I should have stated above, although I'm betting it's assumed, that the "inch worth of clearance" was with the 18" rims on.

"CTS 325mm vs. 302mm in the front." taken from http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums...8-package.html

Re: Winter - Will 16" fit big Sport Perf Brakes

For Carification; all CTS's that came with either the standard suspension and 16" wheels or the optional sport suspension and 17" wheels came with the following sized Brembo rotors and two piston PBR and single piston PBR floating calipers:

Front Rotor sized: 11.90 x 1.25 (sport suspension had OEM directionally vaned Brembo front rotors; standard suspension had pillar vaned Brembo front rotors)

Rear Rotor size: 11.70 x1.10 ( all rear OEM Brembo rotors are pillar vaned regardless of suspension)

The introduction of the 2006/2007 CTS Sport Model came with the FE3 sport suspension and 12 spoke Speedline forged aluminum wheels. The brake rotors on this particular package are sized as follows:

Front Rotor: 12.80 x 1.25 and are directionally vaned OEM Brembo rotors

Rear Rotor: 12.60 x 1.10 and are pillar vaned OEM Brembo rotors.

The larger sized rotors on the CTS Sport utilizes a different PBR caliper cage to accomodate the larger axial diameter of the CTS Sport Rotors.

Before anyone asks; in order to install these larger diameter rotors on a CTS that came with the smaller sized above referenced rotors; you would have to replace the PBR caliper cages on all four calipers that bolt to each of the boss knuckles at all four wheels.

With regard to the question of using a 16" CTS wheel rim with the larger sized CTS Sport rotor; my bet is that the top of the PBR calipers would come into contact with the inside of the 16" wheel barrels. Your best bet is probably going to a 17" rim to insure caliper clearance for winter driving.

Unhappy Re: Winter - Will 16" fit big Sport Perf Brakes

I was asking the same question earlier, however last week, the service manager put my car and one with 16" wheels on the racks and the 16" would not go over the caliphers of the 18". I have the Y41 Luxury and Y43 18" performance pkg.

That is exactly what I suspected and was eluding to in my post:

The inside barrel diameter of a 16" wheel is too small to clear the PBR caliper on the larger 12.8" front and 12.6" rear rotors on the CTS Sport with the above referenced Y43 18" wheel and larger brake rotor package.

A 17" wheel in the 5x115mm size may give you enough clearance on the caliper, but I would dry fit one to be sure.

Re: Winter - Will 16" fit big Sport Perf Brakes

Thanks all, you saved me a lot of frustration had I purchased the 16's.
