Hello all. I'm the proud owner of an '03 CTS. My radio has stopped working. I've taken it to a couple dealers and they tell me that its my window tint. Do any of you have that problem? I even bought a portable xm radio and it won't work. Suggestions???????

Unless you have metallic window film covering the antenna, it shouldn't be a factor. If you do, it may indeed be causing loss of radio signal.

Do you hear anything at all on any band or is it completely dead?

Yes, I'd love to help you clear this up but I need a better defenition of "not working".
Can you clarify what works and what doesn't?

Well, technically it hasn't completely stopped. I works like once every month. lol. I can hear static but can't get a signal. The dealer told me that the tint was blocking the antenna. I thought it sounded ridiculous myself. Sometimes it works perfectly for about 20 mins, then goes back out. I hope I'm making sense. lol. The XM wouldn't work in it either.

    Re: '03 radio stopped working

That is still kind of vague, but.
There is an antenna module above the headliner in the rear. It has some snaps that attach to the glass at the upper edge at the back window and I think one on the front window.
I forget the breakdown as to which is which.
If you have metallic tint it could affect the reception but it shouldn't make the FM band not work at all.

The fact that it works part of the time indicates to me that it is not the antenna.
I recently had an '03 that had a problem where the radio would work for about 2 minutes and then stop. The manual indicated that I needed to replace the antenna module but in reality the radio had an internal problem.
I had another '03 on the lot and I swapped radios and it worked perfectly, then the other car had no reception.

Ask your dealer why it works sometimes if the tint is the problem. See what they say.

For future reference, your radio could have a cassette player, a cd player, am, fm, and xm bands. Any one or all could be a problem but you have to give a better description than "my radio doesn't work" if you want them to effectively diagnose the problem.

The trick is going to be to get them to look at it without removing the tint.
I know I would hesitate, but I would probably look around to see if I had another car to swap some parts with to isolate the problem.
    Are you out of warranty?

Re: '03 radio not working properly

My car has the cd/cassette combo. I purchased an extended warranty but ofcourse I was told it doesn't cover these particular problems. The cd player and cassette player both work properly its just the radio. I know I'm not very good at explaining the problem. All I can tell you is it works sometimes and sometimes it doesn't. I have regular black window tint. I have also been told that installing an FM booster might help. I don't even know what that is. lol. Is there some type of connection that could have loosened? I really appreciate your help.

    Re: '03 radio stopped working

You already have a booster, CTS uses a powered antenna module that amplifies the signal mounted above the headliner.
Check the snaps along the edges of the front and rear windshields, make sure they are secure.
With window tint on the antenna grid (upper part of the glass) it is hard to say that it is not interfering at all, but it does sound to me like you have another problem. What part of the country are you in?

    Re: '03 radio stopped working

My guess is that the guy doing the window tint unplugged or broke something that makes a connection once in a while. If it's the window tint, roll the side windows down and drive in circles in a parking lot. The radio ought to come and go.

    Re: '03 radio stopped working

On my lunch break, I went out and check the modules. One of them in the back window was a little loose but all the rest of them were tight. It still didn't help the radio. I think something has been cut or unplugged when the widows were tinted. You can see where they've been taken off for the tint to be put on. How can I check? I don't want to purchase a new system if I can just plug something back in.

    Re: '03 radio stopped working

I have no tint and no one touched the rear wind shield but I have exact same problem. FM do not work and AM works fine. All other like CD and Cassette works fine.
Some time once a week it comes on normally and then when I am driving 2 to 5 minutes it stats fading and then some time make loud static noise and then nothing. I am thinking of attaching an external antenna and then check it soon. But it is very annoying. Thanks was my only way to communicate with my iPhone and now this is gone.
