    Cts Audio Wiring???

Is there an external amp on the CD/Cass radio in the CTS? The back of the radio seems to reveal a 2 channel common ground output, WHY??? Please tell me how to find a normal output on this radio.
    Thanks T.

    Re: Cts Audio Wiring???

There is an external amplifier on the driver's side of the trunk, behind the carpet lining. I believe the only way to tap into speaker level output lines is to tap into the wiring coming out of the amplifier. I am looking for an alternative way to tap into the speaker level lines but I haven't been having much luck. If anyone has anything, let us know!

Line level outputs from radio (from service information):

All outputs are in connector C2 at the radio, an 8-way Brown connector
at the AMP, the connector is a 24-way light blue connector

    Circuit Pin Wire color
    (AT THE RADIO)
    Left channel (+) 5 Tan
Left channel (-) 6 dark green
    Left channel (drain) 8 bare
Right channel (+) 3 light green
Right channel (-) 4 also light green
    Right channel (drain) 2 bare

(AT THE AMP - base: U66 RPO)
    LH (+) B7 Tan
    LH (-) B8 dark green
    LH Drain not connected bare
    RH (+) B5 light green
RH (-) B4 also light green
    RH Drain not connected

(AT THE AMP - Bose: U57 RPO)
    LH (+) B10 Tan
    LH (-) B9 dark green
    LH Drain not connected bare
    RH (+) B11 light green
RH (-) B8 also light green
    RH Drain not connected bare

Remember, if you're interrupting the RADIO line level signal to the amp, the amp still receives the OnStar cell phone and Navigation voice prompt signals on the uplevel systems.

    Hope this helps!

Thanks for the info. I figured most of the wiring at the headunit out but not at the amplifiers. It still looks like you'd have to tap into the wiring coming out of the amplifier. As far as OnStar goes, the module itself hooks into the amplifier. The Onstar module sends a command over the class II data bus to tell the amplifier to switch to its OnStar mono input and tells the radio to display Phone, OnStar, or Incoming Call. When the request is ended, a signal is sent over the data bus to switch back to the radio input and resume normal functioning.

On another note, I assume you have access to all the wiring to the audio system...does it mention anything about a mute wire?

Nope, nothin' about a mute wire. I was looking at the SRX diagrams and the steering wheel controls have a mute button. The button is tied to a resistor that goes into the radio. I wonder if the CTS might do it the same way (i.e. there might be a particular resistance you could feed to the radio to get it to mute).

I don't drive a CTS, but isn't there a configuration where you can set the LH buttons to different functions? If there's a mute function, maybe you can tie button 1 (for instance) to a MUTE function and have the cell phone imitate that resistance when it wants to override the radio? Just a thought.

Do you own an actual service manual for the CTS? I have tried through the GM site to get my hands on one with no luck.

Try here for the service manual and other literature on the CTS.

You guys rock! Now I've got a bender for ya. Do you know the specs (Voltage&Resistance) on the line-level out of the radio? And did you say I could tap off the line-level without effecting my On-star and other features.
    Thanks again!

I don't know the voltage and resistance off hand but once I get my baby back from the dealer I can take a multimeter back there and measure them. As long as you tap into the line level outputs from the radio, it shouldn't affect OnStar. If I remember correctly, I believe I tested this out by unplugging the line out harness from the radio and I could still hear OnStar coming through the speakers. I'll double check this one when I get a chance as well.

Yeah, I unplugged the output harness and still got all other functions, but I didn't test the Onstar or the Phone. I'm not a rookie by any means when it comes to car audio, but what is a "drain" wire. And I didn't notice any bare wires anywhere on the back of the radio. Is the amp sending out only 5 channels or does it bi-amp the tweets?

A drain wire is used to negate the effects of EMI(electro magnetic interference), usually attached to a shield. This reduces noise.

So simply put, it's a ground. Right? One more question. (yeah right)
What would it take to swap the amp thats back there with the Bose amplifier? And does the Bose amp have high level out, or does it send low-level to individually amplified speaker systems? Basically, since I'm forced to tap the high level coming out of the amp, I wanted to see if the BOSE amp would sound cleaner because of slightly better components used in processing and amplification.

A drain is not a ground but it does connect to ground on one side only. The other side is left open.
