Dumb Question - 06 Auto DSC = Tiptronic?

Remove this ad
Hi,

Dumb question about the auto transmission's Driver Shift Control (DSC) in the 06 CTS... is it considered a tiptronic/steptronic (or some synonym there of)?

A friend states that it is, because I can select the gears going up and down. However, it's been my experience that if I select "3" I have auto-shifting between gears 1,2, and 3 while driving and that it's not putting the car into 3rd like a stick shift.

I guess I'm asking is, if I want to start out from 2nd gear instead of first to reduce the acceleration (like I'm on a patch of snow/ice) is it possible?

Obviously, I just leave it in normal drive so I don't know much about the DSC.

Just an input as I have no idea but the snow mode lets you take off in 3rd gear so it is possible I guess. My dumb answer for your dumb question.

"Snow mode" is no longer an option or button since the 06. That's one of the arguments my friend has for saying that it must be tiptronic. However, when I'm in a dead stop and start off with the selector in 2nd or 3rd I don't feel any sluggishness (as in it feels to me like I'm still starting at 1st with a ceiling of 2nd or 3rd).

But my car knowledge is useless. I'm working on it, but I'm still pretty bad at it.

Re: Dumb Question - 06 Auto DSC = Tiptronic?

they didnt do away with it
its a "manumatic" or "tiptronic" if you want, no skin off my back.
anyway, this was first seen in full production in the 2004 through current grand prix's

okay, the 2003 through 05 cts's have a "snow mode" and a "sport mode" button and a traditional auto shifter. the snow button starts us off in third and the sports mode loads some crazy shifting software that does engine breaking and holds gears a lot longer for max performance.

with the 06 however we lose these and get the manumatic.
you can use it as a regular automatic if you want. OR pop it over to "manually shift" and it pretty much puts the car in the old "sport mode". woo hoo. thats.. "if you want" though. pooping up and down the gears.. but dont fool yourself, if you leave it in first and try going past 45 the car WILL just shift it up for you and call you an ASS because of it (it does this to save the engine) OR you can put it in third and it will take off like it is in "snow mode"

basically you have a manumatic that has the previous modes built into it.
cadillac made the change cause the other "cool" cars where doing it. (mercedes, bmw) you get the idea.

Ok. I'll try it again when I drive home today. I just thought the last time I put it into third I still started out with maximum acceleration like I had started in first. Kind of like driving an old 1991 oldsmobile and putting the lever/arm into "third:" you still start out on first but can't go past third.

So, "manumatic" is officially Caddie's branding of tiptronic/steptronic/etc?
