Newbie Question - Mechanical Pop Sound from Rear at Idle (Possibly Exhaust)

Hi,

Dumb question, but for those that don't recall this is my first new car. The last new car I was in (let alone owned) was a 1989 Convertion van. Hopefully it's just "aluminum expanding" or something, but I want to be sure and don't want to start bothering the dealers for every little thing.

Anyway, I'm hearing strange sounds. This isn't the dash cracking/popping sounds (I have those too) but a mechanical one.

If the car is mildly warmed up (and it hasn't been cold lately) while idling at a light I'll hear 2 or 3 "pops" or "taps" coming from the back of my car. They'll be a few seconds apart then nothing for about a 1-2 minutes. It's quiet, but loud enough to notice with the stereo off. I also know it's my car because I can just "barely" feel it in the pedal.

Each time, it's completely flat and my foot is pretty hard on the break, so I know it's not the car moving slightly with the RPM fluxuations.

Any idea what it could be. My old car made a hell of a lot of weird noises, but it was 15 years old so I didn't care. But this car is new and I don't know if it's just a "normal car thing" or something more serious (like a cylinder isn't firing). If it's a "normal car thing" then I'm fine with it as it's barely noticeable. Just covering my bases.
