Odd DMV Classification - Anyone Else Experience This?

Remove this ad
Ok,

Today I picked up my plates and registration from the dealer. I was quite confused at what I found.

The DMV classified my car as an 8 passenger Wagon.

To recap, I picked up a 2006 CTS w/ 3.6L, Auto trans, Sports pck, Lux pck, and Sunroof.

The dealer thought it was odd, but said it might have to do with the weight class, which is listed as 8 on my registration card.

What is everyone else rated at.

I'll check, but I'm pretty sure mine is rated in its proper class. Maybe there is some mix up with the "8" designation - i.e. class vs. passenger???? Even the SRX is only a 7 passenger vehicle, not 8. Hope your DMV is not charging you extra for the "higher" class rating

I bet you're paying license fees for an Escalade.

Re: Odd DMV Classification - Anyone Else Experience This?

After a while of googling, I finally found the NJ DMV's weight class chart. It's actually correct for the car.

It goes along that any car built after 1980 with a weight greater than 3500lbs falls into weight class 8 (which my registration states).

But as far as the 8 seater thing, I'm going to call the DMV tomorrow and try to figure out what's going on. This happened once before with a car we owned: it was listed as a brown wagon even though it was a non-brown sedan.

Sounds like someone hit SRX instead of CTS for your Caddy. The CTS can hold 4... maybe 5 if you squish people in over the hump haahh. Certainly not 8. Regardless of curb weight the # of passengers is not 8

I dunno... the trunk is pretty big. I think you could fit eight or more, if you sliced them just right.

Five adults fit fine in the CTS as long as they are not grossly overweight. It helps if none of them is OCD or has personal space issues, but three well adjusted people can fit into the back seat. Eight is a stretch though, unless your are sneaking into a drive in and the three in the trunk are really comfortable with each other.

Owner's manual says max 5 passengers per the size and design of the car (somewhat obvious), so the DMV clearly made a mistake. I'd get it corrected ASAP.
