Back in October I had an opportunity to flog around one of three 2004 CTS's available at the plant for employees to take out and test drive. It is equipped with our 3.6 HFV6 engine and all three are fully loaded. Click on the embedded pictures to see all the photos.
I picked it up around 11:00 A.M. and returned it at 9:30 A.M. the next morning. I had my buddy Bryan with me. Being an avid cyclist, I know all the unused backroads of the Niagara Peninsula and thats where we headed out.
I am 6'1" and Bryan a little taller, but we both found the drivers cockpit comfortable. The interior was a little plain by the old Cadillac standards, but I wouldn't turn down the car because of that. I was disappointed with the Bose Premium stereo system, as it would not play MP3 CD's. I'm sure all the '04 Euro and Jap competitors to this car, do. I did like the sun roof operation, simple and functional.
The car had a balanced ride for us and we prefer sportier over luxury. 18" inch rims would definitely be the way Cadillac should have gone though.
We took off out of the city and to the backroads
Most of the driving here was sprint runs from 80Km/h to 160Km/h. We timed one run of 80Km/h to 140Km/h at 5.5 seconds. It is incredible how sure footed this car is winding around country roads at these speeds. The sound of the engine as we rocket to a 160Km/h is AWESOME!
Hauling this rocket down from a 120Km/h by emergency braking was a real experience in the application of decelerative G force.
As we headed back to my house, to let some of the neighbours take the CTS for a around the block ride, via highway, we tried a Slice and Dice maneuver. Beautiful, instant lane change - nothing to it
Back out to the country for more high speed runs where we came upon Orville's farm. We liked his Halloween display and stopped to talk to Orville, a Cadillac owner no less.
In the evening we had a relaxing 125Km/h cruise to and back from Toronto, with some other friends to see the Cavalia horse show. Around 1 in the morning I had the car to myself and took it out to the highway and had it doing a 185Km/h in no time. I didn't even come close to nearing the record held by another plant employee for top speed
In the morning I got up early for some drive time with the car and took it to the canal for some parting shots
Post drive impressions:
It was a haze??????????????
I had planned to buy a Envoy XUV to replace my Jimmy and keep my 95 Buick LeSabre as my everyday vehicle.
The Jimmy stays and the Buick is gone, to be replaced with the '05 CTS-SPORT:coolgleam:
Discovery HD was in the plant yesterday doing video of our HFV6 operations. So if you want to see how this motor is made, tune in to Discovery next fall.
Great review, I recently test drove a 2004 CTS base model, which BTW is an amazing machine... I thought the ride was very flat and never over cooked like a 330i. The car cornered real well, with minimum lean and roll. Another highlight of this vehicle is the 3.6l engine... that feels and sounds awesome. I didn't get the chance to take it on the highway, although off the line performance is truly spectacular... I hope to one day own this vehicle, as of now I drive a 1994 Cadillac STS, which was given to me by my parents for my B-day...
Side-note: I've been trying to get my dad to lease or buy the 2004 CTS I had test driven for about a month now, I even sat down with the dealer and worked out some numbers... I can only wait for my dad to make the final decision, i really do believe that a base CTS is one of the best cars you can get for the money...IMO at that price (31k) the CTS is a steal!
Thanks for the positive comments, but I am just telling it as it is. I had a '91 Eldorado Biarritz, but the new CTS is a whole different animal.
I had searched the forums prior to my post and it does seem that the '03 and '04's suffer from not having MP3 capability. Nothing like great tunes on when your cruising. So I fired off a letter to Cadillac, that I want MP3 capability in my '05.
