2005 CTS 3.6 Manual with bad rattle (video included)

    Cadillac CTS 2005 3.6L w/ Manual Transmission — 80K miles

Brought in to dealer for excessive vibration on idling.
    Engine checked out O.K.
Drive shaft was replaced along with motor mounts, engine sub-frame.

New rattle started to be heard after driveshaft/motor mount replacement, dealer suggested engine sub-frame replacement. Now vibration at idle
is almost gone, now "chattering" noise can be heard while upshifting usually under 2000rpm, and faintly when downshifting or going over bumps in lower speeds (under 30mph). Occasionally also heard at idle / not rolling.

The rattle is hard to specifically locate but seems to be coming from center of car (between seats under center console) no vibration can be felt while noise is heard, and it sounds "tinny" or metallic in nature.

Dealer was unable to locate source of rattle and only other suggestion from them was to replace transmission mount (roughly an additional $500 plus labor). At this point I have already sunk $4000 into repairs and don't have a lot of faith in their opinion, plus no guarantee of fixing problem. Any help/theories of what it could be are appreciated. Thanks.

Marbles in a tin can. Classic dual mass flywheel failure. Explains the vibration as well. Been through it.

The only other thing I could think of is maybe a cat going bad?

I thought dual mass flywheel also, but wasn't sure if the 3.6 manual trans cars had dual mass... anyways.. check your heat shield on your driveshaft in the center where the carrier bearing is.. it will rub on the shield on the exhaust and cause loud chattering while idling and also while moving/ shifting.. ALSO.. we had a crack in one of the catalytic coverter brackets that cause a nasty chatter while idling.. check it out.

Yeah, if its vibrating at idle, its not the tranny mount. A broken transmission mount makes a clunking sound when load is applied. Flywheel sounds like a good place to look. Make sure all the bolts are tight. and catalytic converters can clog and cause back pressure, but im not sure about rattling unless they are broken. That would cause an exhaust leak.

Good luck. Post what you find.

2007-Cadillac CTS, and I was driving along the other day and started hearing a "rattling" coming from the front center of my motor...I had been hearing the sound a few times before upon accelerating--but thought it was normal. My car started to loose speed and it completely died. It turns over they said, but they think with out looking further that its a "broken timing chain"---but I don't think so....ANY TIPS ANYONE??? WHAT IS THE FLYWHEEL AND HOW MUCH was the repairs??? Thanks

Re: 2005 CTS 3.6 Manual with bad rattle (video included)

    A bit more info.

The noise is now able to be heard consistently while in idle, but only at the very specific range of of about 1050 RPM. That is when the vibration gets bad and the noise starts. I don't think the dealer noticed this when they had it, only when upshifting while driving.

I've been looking and listening under the car and I think that the noise is coming from the area around the carrier bearing. Strange thing is that it was just replaced along with the entire driveshaft, but that is when the noise started. I can look at it and hear the noise, but can't see anything loose.

I removed the outer aluminum heat shield (also shown in diagram) from below the bearing mount, but it wasn't the problem.

This is the carrier bearing schematic:

There does seem to be a lot of vibration coming from the transmission while just putting your hand on things while the engine runs. I will look into the dual mass flywheel suggestion. Thanks a lot for the help so far.

Re: 2005 CTS 3.6 Manual with bad rattle (video included)

Ugh... So I just found the source of the rattle. One of the two main bolts that hold the carrier bearing to the car was loose. Was touching around the bearing and noticed I could spin the washer. Tightened it up and the sound is gone.

Mechanic said they checked all the bolts up and down. Idiots.

Glad the sound is gone, but I am seriously floored that something so simple was the fix and I had to pay so much money. Seriously doubt I needed the new subframe at this point.

Here was the fix - larger bolt was the loose one.

Isn't nice how they have no problem throwing parts and your money at a problem? A subframe geez. I was starting to doubt the flywheel after watching the video a few times. When mine went bad it had a rattle(more like rocks tumbling in a can)at idle but it would go away when you would hold the clutch in. At first I thought it was the input shaft bearing since it was turning when the clutch was out and not with the clutch in. The vibration came later and was only at about 1500 rpm. When I took off the pressure plate it was obvious the flywheel was bad that whole center section was loose and wobbly.

Re: 2005 CTS 3.6 Manual with bad rattle (video included)

Yeah I still might be taking a look at the flywheel because I am kind of back to square one with the rough idle. When they swapped out the motor mounts it helped a bit, but they didn't actually locate what is causing it. It is noticeable but not excessive.

I know there are no codes that are showing up to indicate any engine issues. The dealer also said there are no misfiring cylinders and coil pack checked out ok. Other than the rough idle the car sounds and drives fine.

The only thing I haven't mentioned is that about 6-8 months ago both Catalytic converters broke off (separate incidents about 1 month apart) at the point of the flange that bolts them to the engine. Went over a speed bump and then heard the loud exhaust leak. Both of them had to be re-welded to the flange. It was not a rust issue as they simply re-welded over the broken weld. The dealer thought that this was due to worn motor mounts but I wonder if it is connected to the vibration issue as well.

Here is a diagram with how they broke.

Both my cats broke same place. That's what got me digging for the vibration. Did both motor mounts too but was still there. After the clutch flywheel job, smooth as glass. I honestly couldn't believe the difference.
